DC voting rights bill stalled over gun amendment

    WASHINGTON (Map, News) -
Legislation that would give the District of Columbia its first full seat in the House remains on hold indefinitely on Capitol Hill.

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said Tuesday he is unable to move the bill forward without an amendment that would repeal most of D.C.'s strict gun-control laws. Hoyer says he won't seek to bring the bill to a vote until city leaders agree on how to proceed.

why would anyone outside of DC want voting rights for DC? All that would do is make your vote count even less.

There's a Constitutional way DC can have voting representation, and it's called Statehood!

I agree, that is the only Constitutional way to go about it, but I would love to see this law passed and the antis in DC given a black eye. It would also be hillarious if the voting rights without statehood was struck down as being unconstitutional, but they retained the gun part.

    I support statehood for DC.

    THAT would be unconstitutional.

The House of Representatives shall be composed of Members chosen every second Year by the People of the several States, and the Electors in each State shall have the Qualifications requisite for Electors of the most numerous Branch of the State Legislature. No Person shall be a Representative ... who shall not, when elected, be an Inhabitant of that State in which he shall be chosen. Representatives ... shall be apportioned among the several States which may be included within this Union, according to their respective Numbers.

DC statehood is not unconstitutional if it is created in accordance with the Constitution.

    Article IV....

..... Section 3. New states may be admitted by the Congress into this union; but no new states shall be formed or erected within the jurisdiction of any other state; nor any state be formed by the junction of two or more states, or parts of states, without the consent of the legislatures of the states concerned as well as of the Congress.

The Congress shall have power to dispose of and make all needful rules and regulations respecting the territory or other property belonging to the United States; and nothing in this Constitution shall be so construed as to prejudice any claims of the United States, or of any particular state.

Norton is on Kojo right now. She said that this would leave the District with no gun laws on the books whatsoever.

Kojo's response: "So? There are tons of cities in the nation with no gun laws that do just fine."

    That surprised me.

He was surprisingly harsh on her. He wants a vote, and he's right to want it!

The fact that Elenaor Holmes Norton, who has made voting rights in Congress for DC her sole goal in life for the last 40 years, is opposing this bill which would fulfill her lifes' work, tells you just how much the Left hates the Second Ammendment.

really puts it all into perspective doesn't it?:sad20:

Dc is a city and the nation's capitol. It is not a state and should not be considered a state.

But they can Constitutionally become a state. DC becomming a state will not effect the federal property, it will just make the rest of the federal district a state.

Just a minor correction, it is the nation's capital where the Capitol is located. :)
