So a high shoulder shot with this round won't anchor a 200# whitetail?
Maybe I should consider my second choice, 25-06?

I never shot a deer with a 25-06. I have escorted two people hunting who have. Both opurtunities were under 150 yds ish. One dropped right out the other one ran a short distance. bout 80 yds. shot (both were 1 1/2-2 year bucks). I was just happy I didn't have to track it into the cut over but thought it worked pretty good. It only went about 60-70 yards.
I killed a 4-5 year old buck last Saturday with a 243. First shot low shoulder, he quivered and just stood there like he was going to throw up, so I put another one in him higher but below the spine.
When he ran off towards the larger part of the woods I had to get out of the box blind run out about 80 yds on the tractor road and put another right up its ass. It was when it turned I got a little nervous because I thought he was coming back the way he ran but he went over. Ammo was 100 gr Winchester soft point.
Two maybe three years ago, I had my daughter out and she killed a small six or eight with Remington 90 core locks. First shot the reflex was to take off running, second shot put it down after it was down to a trot. Little back but I was happy that it didn't turn into a shit show.
More than a few years ago I took a kid out for the youth hunt. He was shooting a H&R single shot 243. Remington ammo I cant remember the weight. I just checked the head-stamp and bore- made sure we were straight. He drilled a large, large like above average. Wt buck 100yds right in the starboard shoulder and it was still running around the farm two weeks later with a mortified shoulder.
Last week a woman hunter killed a buck out of one of our tower stands there.
Made a good shot, a doe ran off the property and onto the state woods a pretty good ways before it was recovered. It was nickle plated Winchester brass that was tossed out of the gun. Whatever that means.

On the contrast, I know a few who specifically like 243 and have had much success. One in particular is a hand loader.

I like 277 cal and up to thirty, especially for sika. Doesn't mean they always fall right over dead but most don't go far and often have an exit wound. Always wanted to get a model 7 in 308-7mm08 for deer shooting/hunting.

I have a M700 Mountain Rifle in .243 and have had mixed results using it on deer. Using 100gr Core-lokts, some were DRT, some ran a short distance with ample blood, and some went a ways with little blood. Most shots were rib cage broadside shots avoiding big bones. I use larger calibers now; but if I were to use the .243 on deer, I would only use a Barnes bullet.

It's a very accurate round, BUT it has a reputation for being a "Barrel Burner"...

But people shoot 100 round a year at most to hunt. 6.5 CM is way easier and lasts longer for plinking 1000 yard steel. Mine has 2500+ round on 6.5 medium load with zero sign of wear. .243, I shot 20 shots to zero this year

Was used for years by BCoPD tac team as their sniper caliber. Accurate and deadly
That's always been my facilitation with the round. Its innate accuracy. I've even talked to avid reloaders who swore they couldn't better their accuracy compared to factory loadings. I've shot friends' .243 and fell in love with the caliber.
I have shot a truck-load of whitetail with .223. It was never a shot I took marginally. It was either in the neck, whereupon the animal dropped in its tracks, or a heart shot and the animal ran 30-40 yards and expired. I did shoot one in the lungs once. I never recovered it. The wound pretty much sealed up with almost no bleeding.

My goal is to find a round that is accurate and deadly, without destroying too much meat. I tend to be choosy with my shots. I've lost enough deer to marginal shots in my younger years to know now when is a good time and place to shoot.

I’ve killed about a dozen deer with a 243. Never lost one. Never felt handicapped when using. IMR 4831 and a 85 grain Sierra handload is crazy accurate and deadly. Use the same bullet out of my 6x45 and also have collected white tail and a couple sika deer.

A great round. I have a Thompson Center Ikon rifle chambered in 243 Win. Soft recoil but still very capable. 6.5 Creedmoor would be a possible alternative; but I do like my 243.
[EDIT] Super accurate too. The target holes are touching each other at 100 yards.

Or get the most common deer caliber to date........... an 06.
Have one. I'm looking for better accuracy with less meat damage.

*I once shot a young doe with my 300WM. 170 yard shot. It took out both front shoulders. I ended up with 2/3 of a deer.

Well an 06 was good enough for White Feather now if you surpass him............

300 mag has much higher velocity than an 06 so that's not a fair comparison. Zero meat damage with an arrow but try a bullet that won't explode (perhaps a Nosler) like yours probably did.

I wasn't making a comparison. I was merely giving an example of the damage a high velocity. 30 cal round can do to a medium sized critter. I've killed deer with just about everything except a BB gun and a spear. I think a .243 or a 25-06 would suit me well for my current needs. ;)

I’m not saying that a high shoulder shot with a 243 won’t anchor a deer...I’m just saying that I’ve been less impressed with the performance of a 243 on white tail deer. I’ll choose a 30/30 or 35 Rem over a 243 any day for deer if that says anything. If my choices were 243 or 25/06, hands down 25/06. I’ve also seen good results from the almost forgotten 257 Roberts when loaded with modern higher pressure ammo.
