I am in the same quandry with the OP.
The answers submitted are extremely informative to me.
    Thank you!
What about pistol caliber carbines? Same rules apply?

I have default answers ,that are actually pretty useful . Rather than an actual " Zero" distance , they all use a metric of * 1.5 inches high * , with will serve to both make partial allowance for differing trajectories, And assure close congruity of POA and POI at in close distances .

For PCC ( and BPC of similar velocities) :( and smooth bore Foster slugs)

    1.5 inch high @ 50 yards
( ok , if you want 1.2 or 1.7 for some reason , still reasonably close)

Will be within 1.5in of POA out to ( depends on ctg , but somewhere 65-100yds , exact distance to be determined preferably by your testing , or at least balistic program with measured velocity .

For shots inside the house, get a barrel mounted laser. That will allow precise shots at close range. For a distance, it will depend on your sights and ammo.

Because of the design of the AR, the sights are well above the barrel. Real close up will be low. For example, the older M16 rectangular sight in target puts the bullet strike about 1 inch low at 25 meters with the stock iron sights. This zero of M193 ball with a 20 inch barrel puts the bullet right on at 250 yards.
