Hey I was looking today at the CMPs Service grade M1 Garand and wanted to buy it, but I ran into some trouble ordering it because I need a "live fire training" course of some sort, which I do not have. Is there anywhere I can go thats cheap to meet this qualification.

There are a number of ways to meet that requirement. Some don't even involve shooting. Look here:

    http://www.odcmp.com/Sales/eligibility.htm

    Read the list carefully
1 Current or past military service.

2 Current or past law enforcement service

3 Participation in a rifle, pistol, air gun or shotgun competition (provide copy of results bulletin).

4 Completion of a marksmanship clinic that included live fire training (provide a copy of the certificate of completion or a statement from the instructor).

5 Distinguished, Instructor, or Coach status. - Concealed Carry License.

6 Firearms Owner Identification Cards that included live fire training. - FFL or C&R license.

7 Completion of a Hunter Safety Course that included live fire training.

8 Certification from range or club official or law enforcement officer witnessing shooting activity. A form for use in completing and certifying your range firing can be downloaded from the CMP web site at http://www.odcmp.com/competitions/forms/marksmanship.pdf

Number three or four you can meet by coming out to the CMP matches at Thurmont. http://tcandsc.org/tcscCMPMatches.htm One of us could lend you a rifle. You'll get a certificate about a month later, or whenever Kevin gets around to mailing them.

Number eight is the method I used. Click on that link and print out the form. I put the form on a clipboard and asked the Range Officer where I shoot to witness my shooting, and sign off if he deemed me fit. Then I just did some shooting, and he signed the form.

    It was that simple.

Notice you also have to be a member of an affiliated club or organization. There's a list of clubs on their website- just follow the link. If you don't already belong to an eligible club, you can join the GCA, and that will take care of it.

The process is a LOT easier than many people realize. An easy way to make sense of it is to look at the order form:

    http://www.odcmp.com/Sales/pdfs/1orderform.pdf

The last page has a checklist that really simplifies it.

    ----

Now get on the ball and get this done! I swear, once you realize how easy it is, and once you have that Garand, you'll wonder why the hell you took so long.

Then come back and post pictures of your rifle. And bring it out to Thurmont.

Another good reason if you need one to get a C&R.

Yes indeed. It really is easy.

Number eight is probably the quickest, though. You can literally qualify with your next trip to the range. Number eight means you could have your order sent off by Saturday at the latest.

    Just print out this form:

    http://www.odcmp.com/competitions/forms/marksmanship.pdf

and get a Range Officer somewhere to witness your safe gun handling and sign off.

You're right about the speed. I think CMP's supply of Garands will hold for a little while, just about everything else though they had is tapped out or very close.

Should still be $25 per year.

You get a magazine 4 times a year, thin but good glossy paper, lots of photos. Each issue includes an detailed write up on one or more collectable Garands. It's okay, but not a big thing.

The CMP gets updates on membership from the GCA, so you don't have to include documentation of GCA membership on your CMP order form. I just put "GCA- see database" on mine. They can confirm it themselves.

My membership in Monumental Rifle and Pistol qualifies me also, and the CMP has a long list of similar clubs that qualify. But if all else fails, just join GCA online.

Ordering from the CMP is really easy. Just run down the checklist on page four of the order form. I think rifles are shipping in about a month right now.
