My friend reloaded 1200 9mm’s for my pistols using “rifle” primers he thought would work. Some went boom, but far more misfired. There are light indents on all casings.

Unfortunately, I dumped the bad ammo into a large container which mixed with good stuff.

Bottom line - any suggestions how I might ID rifle primers? They look all alike to me.

Was a different powder used in the different cartridges? That's probably the only way. Some primers have a different color inside the primer cup that might be distinguishable. I've used re primed primers before, but not in any kind of quantity. Be careful.

I mistakenly loaded small rifle primers in a downloaded 40 round. CCI said to take them apart and to not shoot them. The downloading of the powder meant more air was available and the extra charge in the small rifle primer would cause a spike in pressure.

Ginex spp, 9 cents per primer, shipped. Ginex primers go bang, just are a bit oversized and do not fare well on S&B primer pocket/tight primer pocket brass.

Unfortunately, SRP/SPP's have the same primer dimensions. Outrider58's suggestion is the only thing you can do and that's a painstaking process...

What primers did he load it with? I've experimented with CCI450s (SRMP's, which are supposedly stiffer than typical SRP's) in my 9mm reloads and they were able to set off reliably on certain pistols, particularly my vp9 and a couple of hammer fired handguns. They can possibly be ran in a PCC as well as those tend to strike primers harder that handguns.

CCI SRP and SPP only vary by how hard it takes primer to go off
    Energy is nearly the same
I have had no issues with modern well functioning pistols making SRP go off.

I think I loaded 400 at one point and they all worked in a G17 and Taurus PT99

Powder was same for all 1,200. He only uses CCI primers. The rifle ones were used to load .223/5.56 for his nephew who has taken an hiatus fm shooting. I was shooting My Sig226 and Glock 26.

A pal who is a competition shooter brought two Glocks that had heavy springs. Ten out of ten miscreant rounds failed to fire. Guess I need to buy a 9mm rifle <g>.
