What optic for a 7mm bolt gun, top load non detach magazine? Red dot? Red dot reticle 1-4? Something longer range?

What are your intentions for the rifle? You are underutilizing the abilities of the rifle by limiting your magnification to 4x. I’d say look at a Leupold VX3i 3.5-10 or something comparable.

You’ll still be able to load the gun if you cover the bolt with a scope. Unless your fingers are the size of a hotdogs.

Which 7mm? 7mm Mag? 7mm-08? 280 Rem? For the 7mm mag you might want a 4-16X scope. A 7mm mag has long legs so to speak. For the lesser 7mm calibers I would say something in the 3-9X or 2.5-10X.

Again, what are your intentions for use of this rifle?

Shorter range, the 2.5-10x makes a lot of sense.

If you are going to reach out with that round, you many want more than 10x at the high end.

For hunting, Leupold 3.5-10x40 is great. I have an old 4x fixed power on my 7 mag. I bought it that way and it is good enough for any reasonable hunting shot that I would take. If I ever decide to change, it will be the 3.5-10x40.
