Just thought I would follow up on a previous comment I made about making pellet traps out of sand filled containers.

These are working out great for me. When an area gets full of holes, I tape it and turn the can around. When I am ready to recycle it, I dump the sand in a colander and shake it over a 3 or 5 gallon bucket. See pics.

Some lesson learned items. 1. Don't shoot small coffee cans with a .25 PCP at 25 yards. It blows right through the can. If you use a large plastic coffee can, you can do it and it will retain the pellets. The small ones will work at 50 yards. 2. Make sure you have a cap on the container. I used coffee containers for the most part which I fill and turn over with the lid on the bottom. This keeps the high powered slugs from blowing the cap off.

These are almost silent when struck unlike a standard bullet trap.

    Enjoy.

I hang a leather welding apron in a box so it can swing freely. Has stopped 100% of the pellets I have shot into it so far, most look virgin when I dump them from box, I have experimented, shot the same pellet 6 times into the trap, and gave up on testing. I dump them out, pick out any deformed, which are very few. And reshoot. I have yet to have one go through the first layer, but then there is the second layer also.

Are you shooting a .177 break barrel or multi pump?

I been using a sturdy 2x3 cardboard box filled with telephone books, old throw pillows, dictionaries, etc,.
Put up a 4x6 plywood backstop covered with a piece of leftover berber carpet.
Except for a little housekeeping of the box, haven't changed anything out in 8 yrs now.

The sand filled containers make it easier to collect the lead for re smelting. If you don't want to reclaim the lead, there are many alternatives for good back stops.

    Where they send me.
I used moving boxes with stuff in them till I got a real bullet trap (will handle most pistol rounds and some rifles). That said, I do appreciate John's point of the sand being MUCH easier to work with if you want to recycle the lead. Good idea.
