Although mixing in rock salt with birdshot might be good for hunting. Pre-season the game and really work it into the meat.

Well the thread title was right. Warning shots are completely useless and in many states could be illegal. If you really need to shoot someone in defense of your (or a loved one's) life, you had better not even be thinking about a warning shot, that may cost you your life.

Salt and whole peppercorns. Maybe throw a few caraway seeds in the mix too.

Having an empty chamber and racking the action is a better warning. Either shoot to kill or don't shoot period. That warning shot is going to get you imprisoned, or sued, or both.

    No. Telling the bad guy:
    1. you are armed, and a threat to him
    2. your location

    are terrible ideas.

I have not-so-fond memories of an unhappy Cajun daddy unloading a 12-ga full of rock salt into my back from about 40 yards back in '75. It burned like hades, and was extremely effective from his point of view - I never saw his lovely daughter again :-)

    I am thinking Old Bay

Rock Salt buffered with Old Bay and go crab hunting.

Be sure you load your shotgun with Old Bay rounds before you take a boat trip on the Chesapeake so if there is a terrible boating accident at least your lost guns will improve the flavor of future generations of crabs.
