Engage had some in stock the last time I was there.

Honestly with all the stuff I have incoming I might just let the Colt in 38 super go. I bought it on a whim cause there wasnt anything else to buy that day. Think I'm also gonna let go the colt competition with blue grips in .45.

If this is your first run at using a gun with that rear sight I recommend you replace them before you cut your hands up on them. Unless you wear gloves or are just target shooting and don't need to run the slide in a hurry. It's been a lot of years since I looked for replacements that fit that slide cut so I don't know what is available now, but Harris Design makes a decent option.

Those sights typically have rounded corners. Should be shooter friendly. I’ve run those sights in matches for eons holstered in ccw holsters and have and no issues.

If that is a TRP Operator I have a couple of them and they are terrible in that regard. Unless they changed something last few years, but they appear the same.

Most of you may remember the Detonics Combat Master as Sonny Crockett's backup gun on Miami Vice but, I remember shooting a friend's a few years before that TV show ever made its network debut and thinking how amazing it was for something so small to be chambered in .45 ACP. It was roughly the same size as a J-Frame S&W revolver. Figuring it had to be a handful to shoot and not much fun, I was surprised that I was totally wrong: the Detonics CM was very controllable and extremely accurate. The muzzle blast was a hoot. 28 years after selling my last Detonics CM, I was amazed to recently see another go up for sale. This one was has a mid 00's build date and is in new, un-fired condition. It came with some nice goodies, too.

The ol' gal doesn't seem to like the newfangled 10 round mags, but stil runs 7 and 8 rounders fine... I might be just as picky if I make it to be 102 years old:innocent0

Considering it had been almost 30 years since the last time I shot a Detonics Combat Master 45, I wasn't sure what to expect. The last one I owned was always 100% reliable with FMJ range ammo and certain brands of JHP but, these things had a somewhat deserved reputation for being a little hinky so I kept an open mind while driving to the range yesterday afternoon. The main thing I wanted to see was if it performed anywhere near as well as my original Combat Master did and if I could hit anything with it.

One thing I always appreciated about these little guns was how easy they were to field-strip. The Detonics Combat Master doesn't require either special tools, advanced knowledge of firearms or colorful language to take apart and reassemble for routine maintenance. I gave it a good cleaning and lubing with FP-10 before heading to the range because, in spite of its unique design, it's still a 1911 that works best when lubed correctly in the right places. It had also never been fired and was bone dry inside.

I wasn't expecting a stroll down memory lane but, that's about how it went yesterday: no malfunctions until round #43, the last shot in one of the MecGar magazines. It was an FTF but, I'm not 100% sure if it was the magazine's fault or if I just wasn't gripping tightly enough during the previous shot. The original Detonics magazines worked without any issues. Overall, it ran pretty much as I hoped it would: clearing the 10 yard 4" steel plate rack wasn't difficult after getting a feel for the sights. Recoil was very controllable. It was fun to shoot one-handed. I wish every first range trip went this well!

Why is the rear sight...uhhh...not all the way to the rear?

Where have you been shooting steel matches?

That video was from one of the practices last year at Delta:
    http://dpfng.com/DpMain.aspx
Their steel matches are on the calendar (usually last Sunday of the month), and typically fill up on practiscore the day registration opens (2 weeks before the match).

AGC is also doing steel every month

It also usually fills up quick. Either one is a lot of fun. You ought to check one out.

It's that way by design. Behind the sight, the slide has been rounded, flattened and sloped downward slightly a few degrees to decrease mass and facilitate reliable cycling of the slide with +P defense loads. Detonics's reason for moving the rear sight forward and having a raised hammer spur is to make thumb-cocking easier for those who don't wish to carry it cocked-and-locked. It also makes lowering the hammer easier.
