There some interesting ones I never would have guessed. Namely, Nebraska and Hawaii.

I grew up in Nebraska - I'm not sure that's entirely accurate. My thought is that the number is a good bit low, which is likely caused by people not reporting that they actually own guns. I mean geez - almost everyone I knew had guns because almost everyone hunted something or other - it was a way of life out there. Then again, it could be that Lincoln and Omaha skew the results.

This article has a percentage for Nebraska that is nearly double what that map shows.

The basis for the Data... https://matadornetwork.com/read/mapped-gun-ownership-us/

    ABSTRACT
We assessed gun ownership rates in 2013 across the
USA and the association between exposure to a social
gun culture and gun ownership. We used data from a
nationally representative sample of 4000 US adults,
from 50 states and District of Columbia, aged
    >18 years to assess gun ownership and social gun
culture performed in October 2013. State-level firearm
policy information was obtained from the Brady Law
Center and Injury Prevention and Control Center. Onethird
of Americans reported owning a gun, ranging
from 5.2% in Delaware to 61.7% in Alaska. Gun
ownership was 2.25-times greater among those
reporting social gun culture (PR=2.25, 95% CI 2.02
to 2.52) than those who did not. In conclusion, we
found strong association between social gun culture
and gun ownership. Gun cultures may need to be
considered for public health strategies that aim to
change gun ownership in the USA.

4000 adults divided by 50 states is only 80 per state.

Biggest surprise to me is Hawaii.

Second is that NM has higher ownership than AZ.

It does not look right for MD. There are about 80k HQL out there. If half of the gun owners applied for HQL, the total of gun owners will be 160k. And MD has 6 million people. Let's assume 4 million are adults. The percentage will be 4%.

Hawaii has a good size population of gun owners, unfortunately, there's not a lot of places to shoot them....

Gun owners. Not handgun owners only. Not to mention those who have owned them long before the hql was ever a thought.

You are only considering handgun owners post 2013.

Lots of gun owners that just have grandpa's shotgun/hunting rifle and don't have an HQL. Actually most of the gun owners that I know (probably 80%) don't have an HQL.

    Lots of strange numbers.

BUT AZ vs NM isn't one of them. AZ has huge urban populations . Even if we call Santa Fe area new wavers a wash with Sedonia area new wavers, Phoenix/ Tucson megalopilis has a crapload of former Cali and Rust Belt denizens .
