As of Jan. 1, 2020, Democrats made up 36.6 percent of the state's 6.8 million registered voters, according to State Board of Elections registration data. Unaffiliated voters trailed by about four points, followed by Republicans at 30 percent.

Far behind those major party classifications, the Libertarian Party came in with about half a percent. The Constitution Party and the Green Party, both of which only gained formal ballot access in 2018, each claim less than one-twentieth of one percent.

Those numbers are shockingly different than the last time Trump ran. Republicans have gained almost 5 percentage points since then, but Democratic registrations are down almost 5 points over that same period. At the same time, unaffiliated voter registrations have grown by more than 23 percentage points.

The trend against Democrats from Jan. 1, 2016, through today is even more pronounced in the western seven-county mountain region of North Carolina, where almost every county has lost 15 to 35 percent of its lefties.

Since 2016, Cherokee County has lost almost 35 percent of its registered Democrats. Clay and Graham counties posted similar stats, on the order of 27 percent declines. The region’s largest county, Haywood, saw a 17 percent drop.

“I think the Democrats have allowed Republicans to brand us as being socialists,” said Myrna Campbell, chair of the Haywood County Democratic Party. “We haven’t been able to counter that, even though we are the party of social programs like Social Security, Medicare, unemployment insurance — all of those things are Democratic values, but we have allowed Republicans to cast them in a negative light.”

Not explicitly 2A news, but we know that red states are more pro-gun rights and thus this holds important implications for gun owners in North Carolina. Just to clarify, I do consider North Carolina to be a red-state, but not a deep-red state. Recent voter registration data shows that North Carolina is becoming slightly redder contrary to common misperceptions.

Hopefully the folks in NC look at their neighboring state up north and see what can happen if it's allowed to go in the opposite direction.

But, but, but ... it sound awful when you point out that our core values are actually "socialism." Stop that.

State-wide Republicans gain voter registration while overall Democrat voter registration declines except in a few counties.

Democrat’s fortunes declined in most of the state, particularly in the southeastern part of the state and in the western Piedmont. Fifty-eight counties saw a four-digit decline in the number of registered Democrats with the greatest declines in Robeson (7,323), Catawba (4,622), and Columbus (4,340)

    ......

Republicans have gained registrations more evenly across the state. Eighty-seven counties had a net increase in Republican registrations while 13 had a net decline.

Two of the counties with the highest Republican growth, Brunswick (8,438) and Onslow (5,369) are on the coast. In the Research Triangle region, Wake (3,991), Johnston (7,276) and Harnett (3,562) counties also had strong Republican growth, as did Davidson County (3,918) in the Triad area. The rest of the top 10 counties for Republican growth all border Mecklenburg County: Union (4,322), Iredell (4,270), Lincoln (3,991), and Gaston (3,365).

I think many people see how Virgina has turned into a light-blue state. Data shows the ground reality in NC is different.

Myrna the moonbat. Nobody in Haywood county really takes her seriously.

Local folks who claim to be democrats are actually pretty damned conservative and have come to realize their fiscal, social and personal values are much more aligned with republicans than democrats.

The hard left turn made by DemonRats don’t play well in flyover land.

    Still 25% more D than R

The top 5 states where new residents come from are below. Florida, Virginia, and SC bring in an influx of red-leaning voters. Plus PA and Ohio do as well.

    Florida (32K)
    Virginia (29K)
    South Carolina (27K)
    New York (27K)
    California (20K)

    https://www.ncdemography.org/2019/1...wing-where-are-our-new-residents-moving-from/

What's not accounted for is North Carolina is seeing an uptick in people from Ohio and Pennsylvania, data shows those voters lean red.

Those Democrat numbers are padded, because there are many folks that are registered D because the old Democrat party in North Carolina use to be more conservative. Those voters are slowly leaving the Democrat party as the data from the western counties and statewide show. So yes they are registered D, but do not think of them as liberals or supporting the current Democratic party. Just Democrats on paper.

This goes to show the left turn of politics today as the dems run left, the GOP walks left to pickup Reagan/Clinton centrist dems. This will and in some cases has left right of center and middle right somewhat under represented. Conservatives are going to either need to get the GOP to come back to right of center or work on a new party. Because the time will come when the Democrat party comes out as socialists officially And the GOP will then become what the Democrat party used to be and that would officially leave conservatives without representation and spell doom for the COTUS.

Sound analysis. Plus November will be all about which base is more invigorated, which appears to be leaning towards Liberals. We can only hope that all of this "protesting" awakens those who are more rational and make up the silent majority that are too afraid to speak up under the current environment of McCarthism.

Our biggest issues are; 1. People that left blue states to move here and forgot why they did. 2. The big indoctrination factories (Universities) in the Triangle. If we can keep energized and keep them in check we can stay somewhat Red.

So Democrats that are pro-gun rights don't vote? aren't registered to vote? vote republican? get there stats from Fox News? I don't see what any of this has to do with a gun forum only a chance for someone to air there political opinions. There are other places to do that.

Not to mention the huge number of New Yorker's moving here. I see several NY tags every day. It scares me that they will bring their liberal politics here, especially their 2A views.

Perhaps you missed the point that politics drives firearms laws.

It's a little early in your game to start schooling other posters, don't you think?

As has been said, I think our biggest worry should be people moving down here from Northeast blue states that expect their politics and expectations to be the same as the state they moved from. When I escaped MoCo five years ago, I was talking with a gentleman at the local Tractor Supply and he said he hoped I didn’t bring Maryland’s politics down here. I said no, I was escaping it. So nice to see we aren’t turning purple yet.
