I'm not mistaken on any of my points, and those that know me know I'm meticulous in my understanding and application of policies and procedures.

Meanwhile officers of the club at the time would use the action pistol range as a private testing ground at any time they wanted.
Are or were you a member of AAFG?

If a member is a RSO, and shoots in one of the action events on the action pistol range, he can request authorization to shoot on that range by himself. Any RSO can have a member shoot under his supervision on the Action Pistol range when no matches are scheduled.

Does that include short barelled shotguns and unauthorized targets?

No, the shotguns and targets would have to be the same type allowed for matches. That would be IDPA or USPSA targets and the shotguns would have to have the same barrel length as allowed in those disciplines. I haven't shot three gun in some time so I don't know what the barrel length is currently.

So I imagine a serbu super shorty wouldn't be ok for the general membership?

I shot trap there 25 years ago,, forget the days, but I would shoot during the week.
This was in the time period when a rifle "tunnel" range was being built, and I think noise lawsuits (don't remember the details).
I enjoyed my time there, but never did join as they had work requirements and I was interested in a "pay to play" range,, I did not have time for a social club.

I am currently looking for a range close to Calvert,, I looked at AAFG again, but joining does not appear straight forward?

I was a member there back in 1999 when I was in high school. I just moved back to the area recently and was thinking about rejoining. I honestly don’t know if I have time to do the hanging around to find a sponsor though. It was a cool place back then and I am sure it is now as well... I remember hand shoveling the whole long ass driveway there one time with my friend so we could shoot during a snow day off from school. Good times!

It is close to home. I shoot Cowboy Action there regularly. I know enough of the good members.

But it doesn't meet the need of a place I can just pop over to evenings or weekends enough to jump through the membership hoops.

Norton, I'm the current Action Pistol Chair at AAF&G. I know what you are referencing from the past. I can say, without a doubt, that we have come a far way from what you remember from year's past. If you'd ever like to check out the range again or talk about the changes that have been made, please let me know. We'd love to have you back as a member.

I just read over the range rules and there is no restriction on any kind of shotgun that I can see. It specifically states that RSO's can supervise patterning of shotguns on the Action Pistol Range.

    It wasn't patterning.

Ok, you were there I wasn't. Not everyone that belongs to the club follows the rules. But they are the small minority and, when they get caught, we deal with them appropriately. Jason has reached out to you with an offer and I will too. ( I am the Plinking Range Chairman) If you want to come over and check out the place or even shoot as my guest, just let me know. Now that I am retired, I probably am at the range more than any other member so give me a shout.

This is true. I see John there all the time.

Yeah, if you like some MF'er finger fvcking your guns, asking you about them, then arguing about if that caliber is legal.....go for it.

Never mind the ubiquitous, "are you a member here" every time you go to the range even though you have your range badge on you.

It was worth it for me to pay on a per diem to go to DelMarVa and not put up with the shit.

In all of the years I have been there, nobody has ever touched one of my guns without asking. Sure, people have been curious and have asked about them from time to time (I like old wood rifles). And with the exception of when NOT wearing my badge, I have never been asked to show. I have also never been asked if I am a member if I WAS wearing it.

In fact, I would say, AAF&G members are some of the nicest, polite people I have met. Yes, the shooting hours are a pain in the ass, but I love that place.

I'm simply stating my experiences as they occurred.

It was nearly every time that I would go that either I'm getting the "are you a member here?" while wearing my badge, someone nosing through my guns or arguing with me about whether a gun was allowed there.

Meanwhile, officers of the range used it like a private preserve.

Let's not even start with the trap range mafia that acted like that trailer was their private playhouse.

    No thanks.

I'm not looking to get in a pissing match with anyone, nor to cast anything negative towards anyone who is still there. I'm simply relaying what my experiences were personally at the time that I was a member and the reasons why I gave up my membership.

I went to nearly every meeting, mowed grass with my own brush hog at the high power range when the grass on the road was so high it touched your vehicle when you drove in.

Tried to get the membership involved with MSI at a time when I was on the board of that organization, participated in Appleseed.

    Still felt like a visitor.

    Completely understand Norton.
Like most organizations, as people come and go, it changes. Maybe you want to stop by and poke around again...you know you are always welcome.

There’s definitely cronyism within private ranges to varying degrees. Some of these clubs are like going to prison: you have to join one of the gangs to look out for you, like “we trapshooters offer you our protection”. I’m sure it’s annoying as hell if you just want to come plink with your kids without a lot of political squabbling.

AAF&G is a fantastic club with great members, but they do have some of the most involved membership procedures I’ve ever seen for the mid-Atlantic. I remember I popped into the clubhouse one afternoon and the new members were learning about RCRA Laws.

I'm an ex- NY State Parkway Policeman & Maryland HS Gym teacher and wrestling coach so I'm no "pansy "----- Loved the club till I had to deal with one range officer who was nasty's brother !! It takes a lot to leave a good club but this guy was it. No name from me but "M" is a bad rep for this good club !;)
