    Comrades,

My wife and I recently lost our house in
Prince Frederick to a house fire. And, yes,
my guns DID suffer badly for real.

So, we are in a lovely rental in Lexington
Park. As we are settling in, we need to get
an internet service for the house, e.g.,
    FIOS, etc.

Question is what is your experience with a service here in this part of SOMD? AT&T? Verizon? Other?

Call Atlantic Broadband (aka Metrocast), they may already have a hookup

If you are/were military: go to Verizon, and get a 5G hotspot with unlimited data for $40 per month.

Until Verizon brings Fios down here, ABB is probably your best bet. I had Verizon DSL for ages, and had nothing but problems with it. ABB has been an improvement.

Thank you, all...yeah, it’s been very
    difficult and devastating...sure, we lost
a lot of goods and furniture, to include
guns and militaria, and the recovery process
    has been excruciatingly slow...so far,
insurance company has been what seems
    to me to be glacial.
As I have noted elsewhere here in the
Forum, I believe this is all part of His plan,
and as such is a good thing.
That being said, I sure do miss our stuff,
especially my guns and ammo, which I
would prefer to have near at hand during these crazy times as we settle into our rental place.

Atlantic Broadband: You can do better, but you can't pay more !

So, you do NOT recommend it?

Others here have called it the only game in town...although a Verizon 5G hotspot was recommended.

I have heard nothing but “bad” about Comcast.

They are expensive for the low speeds they provide via their cable distribution. Unfortunately, back in the day when SMC was still backwards hicktown, 'Metrocast' was the only company that put in a bid for the franchise. Atlantic bought them out and inherited their ancient network plant. As they have a franchise agreement that doesn't force them to provide a minimum level of speed, they just keep milking the locals for all its worth.

You dont have to worry about Comcast or Verizon Fios. Neither covers SMC.

Folks, please pardon my total ignorance on
    this stuff. But...

Sounds from all the above that only that
one company is the provider, and that the
service here in St Mary’s is strictly
    cable-based?

Are satellite-based services an option -we already have the dish for our Direct TV.

    Sorry for your loss

Satellite will have 2 major drawbacks. 1 is the latency ours is about 3 seconds no good for remoting to my office pc . The data cap is about 20 gigs which in a day or two can be gone.

Well, there used to be DSL. But I dont think you can even get a new DSL drop these days. For the commercial properties along 235 in Lexington Park, there may be some other broadband providers. I doubt Lockheed Martin hooks up to a cable modem. For residential, metrocast (and now Atlantic) have the monopoly. There is talk about Verizon running Fios into the area, but thats just what it is, talk.

Used to work in a small town out west. The only internet option for the more remote properties was satellite. In the evening, you would see people parked behind the McDonalds to leech wifi for high-bandwidth applications and to download movies.
