I have a bunch of 10/22 mags that are in need of cleaning. Some are not working well, others are just gunned up. A couple are more than 20, maybe 30 years old. Do you guys think it would be ok to drop them assembled in the ultrasonic cleaner with some simple green or purple power?

I know I should take them a part, but I am being lazy...

    What say you?

Not worth the effort. I'll take them off of your hands and dispose of them properly. Yeah, I know, hell of a guy I am . That said, I'd disassemble 'em if you were to take me up on my gracious offer.

Take them apart is it is easy peasy. There are several videos of how to do it. The down and dirty is you hold the nut end against the body while unscrewing the allen bolt at the end. Then you separate remove the bolt and slowly remove the nut, end piece, rotor, spring and feed lips. Clean and dry everything and they assemble. When you disassemble do it slowly so you can see the little holes where the spring ends go on the nut and rotor.

When you reassemble, you want to insert the rotor, spring end piece and nut but don't drop the nut into is hex slot yet. You need to preload the spring by rotating it 8 times before letting it drop into the hex of the end piece. Insert the bolt into the nut, tighten it snug and you are done.

Before disassembling, push against the rotor a few times to get an idea how you have to preload the spring. Simple green cleans them pretty well. No lube is needed.

Tandemkross has tool for this it is $15. I have it, works great. Check it out on their website. They have a video for it. You get the proper tension on the spring when you use this tool for assembly.

I haven't had a 10/22 long enough for the mags to get dirty. I did take the BX-25 apart to add a bushing. I would drop your filthiest mag in the ultrasonic and see what happens. Let us know how it turns out.

I have several BX25s that need cleaning. going to take them apart, and throw them in the sonic cleaner.

I've had to clean my 10/22 mags several times - sub-sonic stuff is typically pretty dirty. Easy to do, just getting the spring pre-loaded correctly at reassembly is the key to reliability.
