    Venezuela bans private gun ownership

Until now, anyone with a gun permit could buy arms from a private company.

Under the new law, only the army, police and certain groups like security companies will be able to buy arms from the state-owned weapons manufacturer and importer.

The ban is the latest attempt by the government to improve security and cut crime ahead of elections in October

Could it happen here ? Obama has been chumy in the past with his buddy Hugo.

In America Venezuela only the miliary and police will be able to buy arms from the state-owned weapons manufacturer and importer. Wow, that's a socialist two-fer if I ever saw one.

In that part of the world, as with any dictatorship or other government of questionable legitimacy, laws like that aren't worth the paper they're written on. I hope the people I met there years ago have either left long ago or are armed as heavily as possible or both. In my high school years I visited Venezuela with my family to fish and it was a wonderful country before Chavez. it is saddening beyond words to know just how much has been lost because of that monster and I hope the people there take full opportunity to oust his regime and never let any like it ever come back.

I think that's what 'his regime' is preparing for by banning private gun ownership. And what do they cite as a reason ?

Venezuela saw more than 18,000 murders last year and the capital, Caracas, is thought to be one of the most dangerous cities in Latin America.

If anyone doesn't see the parallels to our multi-faceted problems of increased crime, government-fostered class warfare, creeping socialism, and gun-control iniatives like MAIG, that have occured here in the past (and accelerated under Obamarx), they have their heads in the sand. :sad20:

On the other hand, private gun ownership has shown an opposite and dramatic drop in gun-related violence ... while also having a 'chilling' affect on progressive socialist agendas. :sarcasm:

The sad part is that if/when Venezuela becomes a true democratic nation, they will still keep the 'gun control.'

I think that the US, Israel, and Switzerland are the last nations to really respect private gun ownership.

Finland, Belize, and Czech Republic are pretty good about it too.

Here is the most important thing we can learn from this:
Requiring gun permits/licensing/registration is what makes bans and confiscation possible.
Always has been and always will be!

That's what creeping socialism is all about.

Well, Finland sounds an awful lot like our crappier states. Need a permit to buy, can't store operable firearms, can't carry them. Also doesn't recognize the right of self-defense as a reason to own or carry firearms.

Where they are better than us is with regards to full auto (a collector has the ability to acquire machine guns), sound suppressors (unregulated), and historic guns (they will try to auction off confiscated or turned-in firearms if mechanically sound, otherwise they'll try to give them to a museum. Destruction is a last resort.)

As for Belize, there is a $500 permit required for each gun you own, you need a permit to buy ammunition, and the only approved pistol calibers are 9mm and 22LR. Shotguns are also restricted and I believe that rifles are as hard to get there as full auto is here.

    http://www.belizelaw.org/lawadmin/PDF%20files/cap143.pdf

And Czech Republic, you are definitely right, they seem to have acceptable laws. But they too have their stupid rules -- no HPs in pistols, no 'non-civilian ammo,' which means no WOLF or imported surplus ammo. Also no full auto or 'military weapons' like AKM variants. You could probably get away with an AR-15. All weapons must be registered (even bolt action weapons.)

I think their permit to own is also a permit to carry concealed, it runs 500 Czech bucks and is good for 5 years, they also have to issue it in 30 days. There are no 'gun free school zones.'

In the CR you are only allowed to shoot at a licensed shooting range. That blows. There are about 200 in the entire nation.

Sorry about the thread drift, you lead me to do some research, I figured I'd share what I found.

My point is, freedom is not present in the majority of the world, and Venezuela is screwed. It is alarmingly difficult to fight off an oppressive regime, even if you are armed.

Point well taken ... remember this quote ?

"The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. ... God forbid we should ever be twenty years without such a rebellion; what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms." -- Thomas Jefferson to William Stephens Smith, 1787

The blood of patriots and tyrants

So according to Jefferson, we're about 200+ years overdue. Maybe THAT is part of the problem. Just like an errant child, the gov'mnt needs a swat on the arse every once in a while to remind them whose in charge. :innocent0

Well I believe our politicians should lead by example. I believe all those in favor of gun control should tell their secret service men and women that their services are no longer needed. These same politicians should get on nation TV and announce to all terrorist, criminals and foreign governments that they are going to banning all guns and they will start with themselves. They must still follow their same schedule and routine and let’s see how many of them will survive under this new gun ban. Now the politicians that are in favor of the 2nd amendment and true citizen let them keep their rights. We will see how many politicians would be in favor of banning guns after they start getting picked off by angry constituents. Not one!
I never wanted to believe that this country was becoming a socialist country where you have to be protected from your shadow by the government. But when it gets so ridiculous that a governor has to outlaw a 44 oz beverage, enough is enough. This government is on its way to becoming a communist state where the little guys is there to pay taxes and take whatever the government says take. If you cause too much fuss we will call you a terrorist and prosecute you under the Patriot Act. REALLY! If King marched today with civil disobedience, like in the 60's he would be shipped to Cuba in a heartbeat. I know it seems like the extreme but the time has come to reclaim the rights that are actually privileges.
