I didn't read the article yet, but I imagine all sheriffs who honor COTUS are going to be in trouble at some point.

Hopefully not a full thread derail, but does anyone know Carroll County Sheriff DeWees's stance with 2A?

Here is a free article about the situation. It is from October of last year. Same deal, supposed "law letters" with no intent to actually demo the guns. This looks really bad since according to the indictment, "Sawyer signed and submitted approximately 32 law letters that requested demonstration of approximately 73 firearms, of which number approximately 21 firearm weapons were imported by Sullivan." And Sawyer, the Sheriff, is the only police officer in the town of 700 people.

From my dealing with a few sheriffs and talking about it , he is not anti, but not out holding up a pro 2A sign ( I take it as he is pro, but not out there saying it ). The deputy sheriffs I have spoken to about it are glad people can get em. One was before I got mine but had applied, he saw me a month later and asked if I had received it and I said yes, he said I better be using it.

Is the problem here that he signed too many letters, or that the demos never happened?

I don't see how the ATF really has room to complain unless the demos weren't happening.

I believe the claim by the prosecution is that the letters were signed with no intent of there ever being any demonstrations.

And I know that we live in a world of facts, but what police department needs to have 73 different restricted firearms imported so they can be demonstrated for possible sale to a police force of 1 person? Guess he needs to check every model of fully automatic rifle available so that he can pick the best one in the event that he would need to use it in his town of 700 people.

I can’t remember specifically, but I seem to remember him making a statement or publicly agreeing with someone else’s statement about not making arrests to enforce the ‘unconstitutional’ gun laws.

Excellent. I had a felling DeWees honors COTUS...and is just staying off the antis' radar which is fine. Good to hear about the deputies as well. Thanks.

Another Sheriff in legal trouble from the feds. All the facts aren't in but it looks to be at least a political thing but maybe more.

    Another Sheriff in trouble

If some guy, like Larry Vickers, comes into your small little one man police department in a ND town and asks you to import some machine guns from Europe you shouldn't do it. If some guy, like Larry Vickers, can't get large county Sheriffs offices or large Police Departments to import machine guns there must be something wrong with doing it.

Oh, it's not secret that a lot of law letters are favors to buddies. It's just that I wasn't aware of the ATF being able to do much about it. I guess if people don't observe the proper form with the whole thing and do documented demos, that's how they get you.

I mean, end of the day, department of one cop is still a department that could, theoretically, buy an imported machinegun.

Down South, it was de rigueur to give "Reserve Deputy Sheriff" titles to friends and family.
