I'm trying to find out what is necessary(and where...) to qualify for controlled deer management hunts, specifically in MoCo(if that makes any difference), for a friend. I've tried searching on the world wide web, but have thus far, struck out. Any link would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

    outrider,

I can't speak specifically to "Moco" managed hunts, but I do have experience with the DNR run ones I participated in back in the late 90's early 2000's.

In the Hunting regs book that I used to pick up at gun shops, Walmart, Dick's etc, it had the various Managed hunt lists, times, locations etc.

It used to be that you submitted a request for wherever you wanted to hunt, paid $5 per, and then participated in a live fire at a pie sized plate target. ( I did mine at a range up on Harford Rd just north of Carney.)

If you qualify, they choose a limited number of tickets like getting a draw for an elk tag in Colo etc.
Then you show up at the hunt location and do as you are told. My one successful hunt was in Cecil County.

I can't tell you the Moco managed areas, but I am sure that research on the DNR website will.

MoCo has "police sharpshooters" come in to the parks to shoot them. My grandparents got a notice every year that they would be shooting in the park behind them at night.

outrider, what exactly is your friend trying to do? Hunt on the managed hunts, or forgive me for asking, but is he also needing to find out about crop damage permit type hunting too? There is a whole other dynamic there. I had friends with farms that got those permits.

From the 2023-24 season just past.

It is a lottery system. Here are the 2023 permitted hunters

I understand they do that in certain places, but not all.

I participated in only one managed hunt in Montgomery county - at Schaeffer Farm Tract Hunting Area

A person need to pass the DNR qualification - https://dnr.maryland.gov/huntersguide/Pages/shootqual.aspx
I did it in IWLA WAC, usually it happens in the beginning of September, see the link calendar above.

Then a person need to sign up for a lottery, see https://dnr.maryland.gov/wildlife/pages/publiclands/wmacentral.aspx
The lottery is only for one day - opening of firearm season.

I signed up first time three years ago and won. Was able to shoot a nice doe. Next two years I didn't win. The area is famous by its mountain bike trail and has plenty of deer which are not scared of humans. https://mdhistoricdistrict.com/schaeffer-farm-trails/

Link to DNR Central Region Public Hunting Lands (you need to look at each area you are interested in to see what is available):
