MARTINSBURG - A former captain with the Berkeley County Sheriff's Department accused of stealing and selling firearms belonging to the agency and other weapons stored in the department's evidence locker over the course of several years was indicted Wednesday by a Berkeley County grand jury.

Dennis E. Streets, of Martinsburg, was named in a two-count indictment charging him with felony embezzlement and felony fraudulent schemes in connection with the case.

Streets is accused of selling at least 13 firearms worth $5,685 - including handguns, rifles and at least one shotgun - to John C. Vinson, of Glockcop, LLC.

Vinson, a firearms instructor, previously ran for a seat as a Berkeley County magistrate in 2012 and his late wife was the former secretary of the Berkeley County Sheriff's Department.

Streets allegedly illegally obtained the firearms between October 2008 and March 2013, selling them to Glockcop between August 2010 and March 2013.

Streets, who had worked at the sheriff's department since 1982, was the supervisor of the department's evidence locker and oversaw the department's firearms.

He resigned Jan. 27 after informing Berkeley County Sheriff Kenneth "Kenny" Lemaster Jr. two days earlier that he was retiring from the department after 32 years.

The investigation began after a weapon belonging to one of the department's SRT team members went missing. The case was investigated by the sheriff's department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.
