Thinking if getting a couple of these for our club... any feedback?? We can get them from the CMP for about $210 ea... Only about 500 fps but it must be used by the CMP for a reason....accuracy?.... Hmmm.... could be a nice basement plinker

They used to sell refurbished 853's for around $100 (still might, it's a little hard to find on their site). I looked into it but never bight one. Supposed to be one of the most accurate air rifles for the money.

The 853 is an entry level 177 caliber pellet target rifle (sporting class, not precision class) It is widely used by such groups as 4H and Junior ROTC rifle teams. The rifle is very accurate and is a very good rifle for the money. The CMP price is a very good deal as the rifle usually costs about $280 commercially. It will shoot where you are able to point it and squeeze the trigger. For a rifle of this price it is amazingly accurate. It is very light (about 5 pounds) and the triggers and sights (plastic) are not that great. The light weight is okay for young kids, but as one gets bigger and stronger the light weight rifle is harder to hold on target. There is some information on the internet for adjusting the trigger for a lighter pull.

The muzzle velocity is held to under 600 feet per second to be compatible with electronic targets and scoring systems that are used in CMP and other serious air rifle competitions which use the electronic target and scoring system. These systems were not designed to handle faster velocities. The CMP, Olympics and the Internationl Shooting Sport Foundation all have requirements for velocities under 600 feet per second for electronic targets and scoring.

They still do at a $100... May go that route....
