Easy option is sending it back to S&W. They do custom work like what you want at competitive rates. Might get a free reliability job in the process. If they won't issue a call tag to have it picked up, you can send it from the FedEx depot on Oakmont Drive.

You can do a bobtail with a fixture from Brownells, a file and a dremel if you have one. It is very easy as the fixture is hardened.
The commander cut is the more pressing issue. I will probably leave yhe dust cover full length but I want the VIS cut back.

The bobtail I can do if I find someone willing to let me use thier drill press.

If you are speaking of cutting the government frame back for a commander slide it is the rails and recoil guide rod seat which get cut back, not the VIS. If the VIS needs to be cut back because of barrel timing or to get the bowtie that is something different.

John Carduner (MDS trikshot) does fantastic work on 1911s.

He does his work out of Freestate though which is a good hike for you.

Given your location, my first thought was also Hafer's.

I've had work done by both Tim and John and wouldn't hesitate to return to either for more
