Nickel Coated Primers

I was up a Shydas today replenishing some stock, and noticed they had a sh!t ton of nickel coated CCI pistol primers. Like 100,000+ or so. I asked the guy working the reloading register and he didn't know, so what are the purpose of nickel coated primers? I've seen them offered, but never really looked at why...

Nickel provides more protection to the brass just as nickel does for brass cases.
