You ought to try the gun shack in mt.airy. They are only another 10-15 minutes out 70. Good selection and close. I'm in the Mossberg camp too, specifically 590. If you can't find one than a maverick 88 is in the $200-250 ballpark. Best of luck!

A nice condition Winchester Ranger in 12 Gauge for $170. I'm hesitant to post here because I know one of you guys will buy it before I will! Wanted to give the OP first dibs though. Would seem to fulfill the OP's needs perfectly. Can't do better for $170 in my mind.

Tell him to hit up some pawn shops that sell guns. He can probably find an 870 or 500 close to his budget if he doesn't mind it being a little banged up.

Go with the 870. I never had any issues with mine and shop everything from slugs to trap loads.

I third, fourth, fifth, Nth on the Remmy 870. He should save another $150 and get the reference shotgun. It is versatile for his stated needs, parts and mods are everywhere and above all is reliable. He will have fun with this gun.
