      Any Successful Shed Hunting?

I saw a nutria last May at Blackwater NWR, scurrying down the road along the water line. It was my first time seeing one in person.

MD DNR Outdoor Recreation Survey -- Outdoorsman Responses Needed

https://dnr.maryland.gov/Pages/survey.aspx The DNR has a survey out to gather info on the types of outdoor recreation people enjoy in the state. Please take a moment to fill it out, as it's important they hear from hunters and anglers. One of the questions provides a response option of "I'm...

How to find turkeys on public land?

Lots of good ideas already shared. Here is one other -- If we get snow between now and the season, put out some corn and a camera the day before. Then follow their tracks n the snow back to where they're roosting. That should give you a general idea. Then try to figure out what they are eating...

      2023-2024 Waterfowl Season

This was second worst season for me since I started in 2012. 2020-21 was the absolute worst. In six trips to my spot on the Potomac in St. Mary's, I only managed four buffleheads. Bigger divers like bluebills and canvasbacks and a few mallards started showing up in low numbers the past two...

      Camping stove options

I've been using a MSR pocket rocket for 10+ years. Small, light, works, starts up easy, with canisters of various sizes readily available just about everywhere.

      Delaware/Peninsula: coyotes

Coyotes are well established. I've been seeing them in MoCo at McKee Beshers and other places like that for over a decade. If I walk the wet areas on a Sunday during duck season, it's almost a guarantee that I'll see one. I see them in Fairfax County several times a week -- they almost never...

      Help - Herter's Model XK3 .308 Bolt Won't Close with Cartridge In

Username checks out! Ha! Are you familiar with these particular Herter's models? Thanks. I had that issue fixed by a gunsmith -- he had to ream the bore. I shot it the other day and it functions fine now. The ejection reliability isn't 100% but it works well enough that I'm going to keep...

      Help - Herter's Model XK3 .308 Bolt Won't Close with Cartridge In

Further update: those Big45 Frontier pads are amazing! Thank you for the tip! Unfortunately the rust had penetrated beyond the bluing, but at least the pads got the rust off with just a little elbow grease. I just ordered more of them.

Do You Clean your Rifle After Every Shooting Session?

I really like hunting turkeys, but unless I get an opportunity on a private property where I know exactly where I'll be sitting, I have decided I just can't do it. I've gotten into too much poison ivy over the past few seasons walking in the dark and I pay for it for weeks/months afterwards.

Do You Clean your Rifle After Every Shooting Session?

I enjoy taking them apart and cleaning, so I do it every time I shoot one. The only exception is with a shotgun if I only shot a few shells, the weather is dry and I'm hunting again the next day, I'll wait until the end of the trip. Once a year -- generally in February or March when I switch my...

      Help - Herter's Model XK3 .308 Bolt Won't Close with Cartridge In

I was able to shoot the rifle yesterday for the first time. It is very accurate - I am by no means an amazing marksman and was able to shoot a 2 inch group of 6 at 50 yards. This makes me want to continue working on the rifle, including getting the rust off using the Frontier wool pad. I put a...

      Help - Herter's Model XK3 .308 Bolt Won't Close with Cartridge In

I took the rifle to a gunsmith and got some helpful information. He took a casting and confirmed it is 308 caliber. The headspace is on the tight side so they will ream it to get to proper headspace. He's also going to reprofile the extractor slightly. The diagnosis fee was about $150 and...

      Help - Herter's Model XK3 .308 Bolt Won't Close with Cartridge In

Thanks for the quick feedback! Bigfoot — yes it has a different bolt stop and safety mechanism. Took me quite a while and some sore fingertips to figure out how to disassemble the bolt! This rifle came to me a few years ago from a relative and it’s been on my to-do list ever since. The...

      Help - Herter's Model XK3 .308 Bolt Won't Close with Cartridge In

I am seeking some Team MDS help before surrendering and going to a gunsmith... I've got a beautiful rifle that I'm trying to get up and running. It's a Herter's Model XK3, which is a Mauser type rifle made for Herter's stores in the mid-20th century. I can't decide if it was made by BSA in...

      Bambi Whacking 2023-2024

I saw lots of activity last night, including my "target" 8 pointer. I thought he was coming towards me but then another buck appeared from the opposite hill. They snorted at each other and ran in different directions. I went inside around 9am this morning due to the heavy rain. Heading back out...
