Im newish to reloading so not a lot of experience. Had a question about reloading 45/70 300gr bullets with no cannelure. Is it ok to reload and crimp down bullets or does it need cannelure? Some say yes you can some say needs cannelure...this is for a Marlin lever action

Some jacketed bullets can be crimped without a cannelure. One problem is that it is hard to get consistancy on non cannelured bullets. You can also buckle the case in some instances. My suggestion is to use a taper or collet type crimp on jacketed bullets for your 45/70 unless they have a lead half jacket.

    what grain bullet?

    :omg:

Their actually .457, since they are jacketed, 405 grains. I have had them for years. They are in old yellow Winchester Western boxes. Here's a pic.

You can crimp without the cannelure.

Yes as others have said, I use Hornaday Matches Set dies, One of the dies is just for setting the crimp. Once your cases are set to the same length and your crimp is properly adjusted you are golden.

For my Henry 45/70 I typically trim all my cased to 2.042 regardless of bullet grain weight. My overall case length is set to 2.41 which works best in my Henry. I have been using both Berry's 350 gr FMJ FN and Hornaday 325 gr FTP JHP.

I have been able to reach out to 150 yards and hit a 6 inch steel target, no scope just my iron sites.
