Ruger is closed today and I have a question that needs answering.

Are all Ruger Blackhawk cylinders the same length regardless of caliber?

Bust those bad boys out and take some measurements.

I have an idea for a new chambering, but I need some numbers.

Especially from someone who has one in a .30 carbine caliber.

    Thanks a lot fellas.

Fine question and I have no idea. I have one in .45lc that I can measure when I get home.

I have a Super Blackhawk in 44 Magnum. It was manufactured in 1978. The cylinder is 1 11/16" long.

    11/16ths is 1.688 and I will allow for a fractional tolerance of 1/64th or .016 So we'll say 1.704

My Blackhawk is 45 Colt is 1.710 and my Old Model Vaquero in 45 Colt is 1.705

That's two calibers that are very close is length.

    +1, .41 and .357 a tad over 1 5/8" but not quite 1 11/16",measured with a tape.I can mic them if needed.

Excellent site, Sir. My Old Vaquero is built on a Blackhawk frame. It's a beefy looking gun with a 4-5/8" barrel.

If we split the difference on yours it's 1.656

If you can mic it that would be great.

    Keep the numbers coming.

I really wanna hear from an .30 carbine owner too.

    Thanks for playing along guys.

    That's in line with SRD's .41

Starting to look like there are some differences in cylinder lengths based on calibers.

This does bode well for a longer .30 carbine cylinder.

I just measured my New Vaquero, 45 Long Colt, manufactured in 2012. It is 1 7/16". I measured both of mine with a tape. My mic. is upstairs. I can go get it, if you need me to. I have a friend that has one in 30 Carbine. If you want, I can call him and ask for a measurement, if it is not buried too deep in his safe.

Yes and thanks for the offer to call your buddy.

The New Vaqueros are roughly built around Colt SSA dimensions.

Much smaller and can't take nearly the punishment of an Old Vaquero.

My 4 digit .41 mag measures 1.712" and when measured from the ratchet to the end of the bushing is 1.955" ( note this is the recessed cylinder type).
My 5 digit .357 mag. measures 1.602" and is 1.831" measured from ratchet to bushing.
My early first production Vaquero in .45 long colt measures 1.702" and is 1.972" measured from ratchet to bushing.

    You will need both measurements.

Edit to note that there is a difference in the cylinder diameter and frame opening between my .357 and the two larger calibers. Check that dimension also.

hey guys off topic but I have a new model super blackhawk 10.5 inch SS and have always wanted to mount a scope on it. Any products out there yet that don't require drill and tap?

My friend just got home and called me back. It is 1 11/16" in 30 Carbine. I hope this helps you.

    Thank you, Sir.

    That'll work.

Gotta wonder about the reasoning behind the .45 Colt cylinders being longer than a .30 Carbine cylinder. There's still something there to work with I believe.

Maybe to accommodate long and heavy bullets. I've loaded 357 grain Hunter's Supply bullets in my .45 Blackhawk and they come damn near to the end of the cylinder.

Now I just need to locate a .30 Carbine pistol locally.

Thanks again to all who helped out.
