    First, the written regulations:

    Handgun Regulations
Modern and muzzleloading handguns may be used to hunt upland game(except dove and woodcock) and forest game (except turkey), woodchuck, fox, coyote, opossum, nutria, fisher, skunk and raccoon. However, modern handguns may be used to hunt deer only in those counties where the use of a breech-loading rifle for deer hunting is permitted with the exception that modern handguns may be used to hunt deer throughout Frederick County. Any modern handgun used for deer hunting must have a barrel length of 6 inches or more and use ammunition which produces a muzzle energy of 700 foot-pounds or more. Muzzleloading handguns (both single shot and revolvers) may be used to hunt deer in all counties. Muzzleloading handguns used for deer hunting must be at least .40 caliber in size with a barrel length of at least 6 inches and use not less than 40 grains of black powder (or a black powder equivalent) and propel one all-lead, lead alloy or copper soft-nosed or expanding bullet or ball at a single discharge. Contact the Maryland State Police for information about handgun purchase, possession, transport and use in non-hunting activities.

Now a question about the unwritten regulations:

Where you can legally hunt deer using a breech-loading rifle, during firearm season, can you carry both a rifle and a handgun that meet the above regulations AT THE SAME TIME?

Don't know and I am curious as well.

Didn't know about the 6" barrel requirement for pistols either and thanks for the info.

Funny thing about Maryland law is that, for the most part, if it is not mentioned in the books or specifically banned in the books, then it is not supposed to be illegal or it is not supposed to be implied to be illegal, as I understand it. (a little different, but an example is driving while barefoot. although in some states it is illegal, in Md it is legal simply because it is not mentioned in the Annotated Code. Another example is driving through a corner gas station to circumvent a red light. It was always legal until they passed a law, placing it in the Annotated Code, specifically banning it 7-10 years ago.) You have to research it though because some policemen (and some DNR LEO) may not realize that it is allowed or not banned and still give you a little trouble.
