Basically, what do I want to look for/at in a Garrand. I recently came across an M1 for sale locally, but have never seen one with (what appears to be) a brass gas tube. It's a Springfield with an
8m(?)serial # and no other visible marks, at least that I could see. I've done some searching around the net and haven't seen one that looks like this.......Help?

If it had a brass grass tube that's definitely a problem. Garands have stainless gas tubes which were painted black.

Sure that wasn't an 800K serial no.?

Red Flags everywhere. sounds like a cast receiver springfield copy. SA stopped making real garands at 6,099,905 (Duff). Add in a brass gas cylinder and you may have plated parts from a drill rifle added on....

You're best bet would be to order a service grade from CMP and request a replacement stock (see lambo's rifle) or to order a service grade without a sticky and take your chances with the luck of the draw (i can suggest someone on the site who would be more than happy to help you fix up a dented stock :D )

You are out the door and guarenteed to get a rifle that passes all of a gunsmiths inspections or they will make it right.

If you have any questions on how the process works I'd be more than happy to help...

He might have to revise that statement, I have a real one with a 7xxxxxx serial number.;)

3rdRecon is bringing up the illusive Italian hybrids. The Italians made Garands on US tooling after US forged manufacturing had stopped.

All the us manufactured receivers after that range are cast. The WWII commemorative Garands are assembled from usgi parts on Italian receivers.
Those receivers are marked Springfield armory but were actually manufactured overseas. The drawing number on the leg will have a pb prefix.

The Springfield armory that exists today is not the same as the earlier company. they still make nice weapons, some, like his garand, are 100% USGI spec.

BTW my CMP Correct arrived today and all I can say is wow.

Much nicer than the guns they had at the eastern games. These are truly mint garands.

I am amused that CMP changed out the buttplate on one but other than that they are perfect!

    They really look unhandled.
