Has anyone here ever discussed the gun control laws with the Maryland Catholic Conference? I don't see a specific position from them yet on the pending bills but they have a general statement indicating that they will support something this session to reduce gun violence. There is not Catholic teaching I have ever read which counsels specifically in favor of those measures, however, especially when we are in a state that already has very strict regulations. It seems to me it could be helpful, in the public debate, to clarify this point. There are a lot of Catholics, such as Knights of Columbus members, who oppose the pending restrictions and ought to be recognized as legitimately doing so by their church leaders. Of course the are issues that are not negotiable for Catholics. I see no evidence indicating that the Maryland bills qualify in that category. I am curious if anyone has experience discussing this with MCC or other Catholic leaders in Maryland.
