I've been watching some videos lately and they have suggested that one with a state handgun permit can list their permit on the NICS form and no actual NICS check has to be performed because your permit is the check.

Anyone know if this is true and applicable in Maryland?

I'm assuming not for pistols but how about rifles?

That only applies for permits the ATF has certified as compliant. I’d imagine state authorities have to apply to ATF for the status.

No, it is beyond that. The Brady bill leaves it up to the states if the state wishes to allow their carry permit holders to skip NICS. IIRC somewhere around a third to half of states allow their residents to skip NICS with a carry permit. You can guess which half don't allow their residents to skip NICS with a carry permit...

    Does not apply in Maryland.

I routinely use that method to buy handguns and rifles in Texas. God Bless Texas.

States have to apply for it and states have to comply with the federal requirements, one of which is to run all permit holders run through NICS regularly (IIRC monthly).

Also be aware some FFL's will still run NICS even if the transferee has a permit.

Your status with respect to all of the databases that are checked needs to be performed each and every time you purchase. You may have become a felon or ineligible in between your last purchase and your current purchase and if they relied upon a document you obtained 9 years ago they could miss a lot of things.

Maybe this is something to press for next year. We need to start taking the offensive.

    Now, that's funny.

Maryland loosening any possible restriction/requirement? Not gonna happen without POTUS calling in the National Guard to escort the MD GA to prison for sedition.

They did drop the shell casing requirement for new handguns and the fingerprints for HGP renewals. I’m still shocked years later (and those were very minimal gains).
