I just prepared an email for my wife to send to a girl that recently moved into the area and had some questions on getting a gun and carry permit for protection.
This got me to thinking that there doesn't appear to be one location which has all the pertinent info here. I'm sure I'm probably missing some stuff like a link to MSP http://www.mdsp.org/services/licensing.asp (they are silly and have almost everything there in PDF format kinda like handgunlaw.us) and links to the Md Ann. Code, http://michie.lexisnexis.com/maryland/lpext.dll?f=templates&fn=main-h.htm&cp which is a PITA to read online anyway. But here is what I came up with:

    MD Carry permit info

MD is a "may issue" state, meaning that permit applications are subject to denial for various reasons as opposed to a "shall issue" State like FL, which is required to issue a carry permit as long as the applicant is not otherwise barred by law from owning a handgun. Basically in MD, the average citizen cannot get a carry permit.
See this thread for more details:
    http://www.mdshooters.com/showthread.php?t=3703&highlight=ccw
There is no permit required to carry a gun in your own home or business or on your own property (a vehicle is another matter and is subject to other laws).

To be able to purchase a handgun in MD one has to complete a 'safety course', along with the normal required qualifications such as a waiting period and background check at time of purchase.
The safety course can be taken online here: http://mdgunsafety.com/

Many people that wish to get a carry permit, who travel outside MD, opt for one from Florida as it allows one to carry in many States, (27 for a non-resident permit last I checked http://licgweb.doacs.state.fl.us/news/concealed_carry.html) including DE, PA, and VA. It is also generally easier to get a FL permit than some of these individual States which may have additional requirements (eg. DE requires reference letters and a public notice to be posted in the newspaper).
Maryland does not honor any other State's carry permit, you must have one from MD in order to carry in MD.
For more on the FL permit and to request an application packet see: http://licgweb.doacs.state.fl.us/weapons/index.html

Much more information on history and legislative action regarding Maryland carry laws can be found at: http://www.marylandshallissue.org

For nationwide carry law and reciprocity info see: (always refer to the official state laws, usually links are provided, as these sites may not always contain up to date info)

There is no permit required to carry a gun in your own home or business or on your own property (a vehicle is another matter and is subject to other laws).
Apparently, as I read it, you can carry a loaded "handgun" (and SBS or SBR) in a vehicle while on your own property (but loaded rifles and shotguns are a no-no).

Maryland does not honor any other State's carry permit, you must have one from MD in order to carry in MD.
...except for law enforcment with a department ID and for retired officers with the national permit.

Good post! Good idea for a sticky.

Guys, feel free to omit/delete my post if this becomes a sticky. I won't mind.

t3, also, to purchase a pistol in Maryland you do not need to take a safety course if you are an honorably discharged veteran or current member of the armed forces. Would be a great idea to organize that stuff for easy reference.
