No photo of the bear's AK-15? Press is getting worse than than the weather report getting things right. I guess they didn't have a pic of a polar bear.

I love the standard line that they have in every one of these articles - bear attacks are rare - do not fear, citizens. There can be a spate of grizzly attacks in Yellowstone, but they will make sure to calm us that these rarely occur - and then whoops, another hiker was mauled.

Of course, it's all a matter of perspective. Yes, there might be a steady state frequency of attacks with a fixed population of bears, a fixed population of humans, and a limited frequency of encounters. However as the bear population increases, the human population increases, or the incursion of bears in human populated areas or incursion of humans in bear populated areas increase - then the number of encounters increase - and the number of attacks will increase. The "frequency" might stay the same (although there will likely be variance if bears either increase in their fear of humans or get accustomed and less fearful of humans) - but the number of attacks will go up.

We're possibly seeing this in New Jersey (deadly attack in 2014 and a scout leader that survived an attack in 2015). In Maryland, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia with increasing bear populations, it's something that also shouldn't surprise when these occur.

I'm glad this lady is ok. Being attacked in Frederick area (even with the increased number of bear sightings locally) has got to be a surprise. It serves as a reminder why a dog can sometimes be an excellent hiking companion (not that they win in size, but they are aware, fast, and probably can get an overly curious black bear to run). And it also reminds the populace another reason why bears are managed in MD and other states.

google is your friend, I am not.
MD natural resources police reports that they have located the bear and euthanized it. I guess the bear was wearing a radio collar.

The victim suffered a broken arm, cuts to her head, and puncture wounds to both arms. :whoa:

The victim got between the cubs and the mother bear. Never a good place to be!

That's only a couple miles from where I hunt, one was seen a couple of years ago on opening day of deer. I was hoping to get a picture on the game camera......

Moral of the story: DNFW bears. Any kind of bears.

When my wife moved from Chicago to MD after we got married, we drove over to Grafton, WV to meet my oldest son. He lives out on an isolated stretch of country road and my wife was snapping pics of anything and everything with her phone when she asked me to stop the car. I stopped without asking her why and she proceeds to jump out and run up to a black bear she saw, milling around by the side of the road.

Fortunately, the bear got spooked and took off running but it could have easily gone the other way.
