Do you really want your wife's life to depend on 6 rounds? A revolver is a terrible idea

Some of you seem to think all women are mentally retarded, frail weaklings.

My wife weighs 108 pounds, fully dressed. She's very smart, but not built for strength and durability. ;)

I have an LCR in .38spl.

It is not, IMHO, a gun for a casual shooter. It takes a lot of practice to shoot it well, and the recoil and flash are substantial.

If you decide on a smallish revolver, the Ruger SP101 is a very nice compromise between a pocket revolver and a full-size. Just use .38spl in it rather than .357.

Agree with this- my wife is by no means an expert but does like the SP101 in .38sp. LCR’s and other Airweight types are too much for the inexperienced and the recoil from practice with them might turn her off on the idea or cause hesitation in the wrong moment.

Nah. We just have an ENORMOUS amount more of experience with self defense and handguns than you do.

The S&W 64 service revolver is great (and my wife's favorite). I don't think a snubby would be good as a nightstand gun; for CCW, yeah, but not as a nightstand gun.
OP- Have your wife fondle multiple .38 Specials with 3-6" barrels. She is welcome to shoot my (wife's now) S&W 64 w/4" barrel.
Regardless of gender and stature, I have found that many new shooters quickly become comfortable with a .38 Special service/old school cop revolver. They see it as a "real" handgun (vs. a .22) and usually feel comfortable shooting them after a few cylinders. When I say "comfortable" I mean they quickly focus on accuracy rather than fear.

    PCC = Pistol Caliber Carbine?

Yes, easy to run, stable, powerful enough less muzzle blast than most other firearms. Mosy can run them pretty well with little instruction. Compact rifles can work, but can take more work to run, and muzzle blast can be intimidating. Something like the Ruger PCC runs about as easy as a 10/22, can have 30+ rounds of 9mm, added is easy to shoot with added stability with the stock. Put a new shooter(or even an experienced one)with a PCC aggainst one with a revolver, and pretty obvious which one can hit more targets faster.

Long gun instead of/ in addition to handguns for home defense is a seperate topic in itself
The OP created this thread specifically for " Bedside Gun " . Unless one is taking the position that ALL handguns suck , and catagorically are substantially unsuitable for home defense , the constructive conversation is on the relative merits of various handguns .

This is one of those answers that never changes. If you're going to let her shoot different types of guns at the range, wait until she's done that and then ask her which one she liked best. If it's a viable defensive gun, go with that one.

    this.

Also hard to grab it from learning in the corner while still in bed, then level it at the guy on top of you because it took so long to get.

I was going to make a snarky comment about my first wife but then I thought, no, she probably reads posts here, will figure out it is me, and then she'll come by and run me over with her car. :D

Did anyone mention the obvious? Get a big dog, and not a soy toy dumbass like a golden retriever, but a real dog. They make for great early warning and intimidation rolled into one furry companion.

A dog isn't a bed side firearm. LOL

Warning dogs deter burglars. Home invaders couldn't care less about dogs.

Because most people own asshat designer dogs. When we lived in California and I traveled a lot we had a Malinois. Home invaders would get eaten if they came in, leaving plenty of time for the wife to arm up. None of this wake up with a person in your bedroom nonsense.

My wife is interested in having a firearm on the nightstand on her side of the bed. We don't have any kids. She is totally inexperienced with firearms. I'm going to take her to the range to shoot a couple of my firearms under strict supervision and she will enroll and take a firearms safety and handling class.

The question is, what firearm to get her? And what style? I'm thinking one of the small Ruger revolvers, like an LCR in 9 mm or 38 special, because they are simple and go bang every time but I also wonder if she'd want to mess with a semi-auto of about the same size and in .380 or 9 mm. My feeling is the revolver is a better choice for an inexperienced shooter.

    Suggestions?

Spoiler alert, she secretly wants to kill you... be careful go with a .25acp or a .22 that way when she "accidentally" shots you you're much more likely to survive.
