I'm reading about the Supreme Court hearing today regarding the D.C. handgun ban, regardless of the 2nd Amendment guaranteeing the RIGHT (not privilege) isn't this issue crystal clear??

D.C. doesn't allow handguns yet it has the crime rate is through the roof? The criminals know that the majority of the population are easy targets.

Turn the situation around and allow LAWFUL citizens to protect themselves. The crime rate would tumble faster than our economy.

I'm curious to compare the crime rates of states like Maryland, etc that do not make a CCW permit easy vs. those that do.

    I'm sure it would shocking.

With that same crowd, one of them started talking about how the Constitution didn't prohibit the government from enacting gun bans and I set him straight for about 2 minutes about how the reality was the Constitution didn't grant the government powers, it enumerated limitation on those powers and if it wasn't stated that they could restrict our RKBA then by default it meant that they could not.

I'm not gonna say you're right or wrong, but thats an argument that dates back to the constitution itself...

By your argument...the government broke the Constitution when they made the Louisiana Purchase.... Nowhere in the Constitution does it say that they can buy land like that.

look at MD's violent crime rate as published by the FBI (3rd worst in the nation), and the Brady's centers rating giving MD the 3rd highest rank in the nation for restrictive gun laws.

Compare this directly to virginia's FBI and Brady rankings.

Jefferson thought it violated the Constitution when he made the purchase. Latter political scientists have claimed that in the Jeffersonian Presidential model the President's powers are only limited by what it specificaly says he cant do in the Constitution.

It is typical for the Justices to challenge both sides on their submittals. The results is that each side typically thinks that they won. The reality is that the Justices review all the submitted briefs and review similar law reviews (Freedom of Speech, etc.) and will base their decisions on ALL the evidence submitted and their beliefs (very scary) in what the intent of the writers of the Constitution was. It would be very short sighted to base an expected decision off what transpired today.

Expect a 5 to 4 decision with current and future gun laws being challenged by both the Majority and Minority Opinions. Both Opinions will influence the laws for the next few years. I expect many new gun cases being presented to the SCOUS in the next two to five years… expect to win some and lose some, but the fight is not over by a long shot!

I would have to agree that they have already made up their minds or have enough data that they will base their opinion off of that. Only reason they have public hearings is because dog and/or bum fights are illegal and immoral so they go for the next best thing, Lawyer fights. Does anyone know if Clarence Thomas said anything?

Our MSI hats and MD Shooters shirts were photogrphed many times through the day, but it seems that the AP chose to run a Brady photo instead.

Yeah, but she'd kind of cute, so I don't mind

    From an abcnews article:

---Justice Souter and Stevens seemed most hostile to the idea of individual rights. Souter, of course, focused on history to suggest that the founders were concerned with a militia. Stevens repeatedly pointed out that most states at the time—except Pennsylvania and Vermont—didn’t think self-defense was grounds for providing an individual right to bear arms.

I freaking cannot stand that piece of crap c#ck gobbler Souter :mad54:

Hell of a pick for the court Bush 1, hell of a pick

But, don't you know that all the violence in DC is caused by handguns? Gosh, its not the criminals, its the guns themselves committing all those crimes! I have to work hard daily to resist the evilness of my handguns, they are always calling to me and saying " lets go kill someone!" OMG!!!!!!1!!!!1

Norton and I were interviewed many, many times by different news agencys....Novus got interviewed and had a few nice exchanges with the brady mouthpieces.

Our MSI hats and MD Shooters shirts were photogrphed many times through the day, but it seems that the AP chose to run a Brady photo instead. :puke:

I'm not surprised, The media is pretty much anti-gun so it make sense for them to show a pic of the brady goons instead of both sides.

On the other side of the gun ban issue was Don Pollock, 67, a retired military special operations officer from Bowie. "This is the big one. The court finally gets to review the terrible [gun] laws of the last 70-something years."

He and other men wore blue caps bearing the name "marylandshallissue. org," an organization that is seeking to broaden the ability of Maryland residents to carry concealed weapons.

Does any one know of any wed sites I can go to and see how the other side thought they did. It would be intersting to see if they are doom and gloom (eg b!tching) or possitive.

Statement of Paul Helmke President of the Brady Center On Supreme Court Oral Arguments

    For Immediate Release:
    03-18-2008

    Contact Communications:
    (202) 289-7319

Washington, D.C. – Paul Helmke, President of the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence, issued the following statement:

"Today, the Justices of the Supreme Court thoroughly discussed the Second Amendment of the Constitution for the first time in nearly 70 years, in the District of Columbia v. Heller case. Their probing questions, and the lawyers' responses, highlighted the complex history and competing approaches to gun regulation in our country. I am hopeful that their ruling will uphold the right of people in communities like the District to enact common sense gun measures they feel are needed to protect themselves and their families.

"One of the reasons we have weak or nearly non-existent gun laws today is because a lot of politicians, and many citizens, think the Second Amendment limits our ability to enact common sense gun restrictions. Today's arguments, however, demonstrated broad support from all sides for responsible regulations concerning guns.

"Think how much safer we all would be if we made it harder for dangerous people to get dangerous weapons nationwide, not just in a few areas."

    this is so bogus!!!

Im in aww how these anti gun people react and throw about there concerns if it werent for the common man being allowed to own fire arms in the first place this country wouldnt even be here. The meaning of "regulated MILITIA" was the fact the untied states at the time did not have a regular military which means when the red coats had invaded our only defense was through the many militias throught out the first 13 original states. Also alot of people forget to recognize that most criminals and terrorists arent going out to bass pro or dicks to get there guns. And its not guns that kill people, its insane and completley stupid or greedy human beings that kill people. :) Im for guns all the way they would have to kill me to get mine!

Thanks to all of you that were there....

I was drooling/chomping at the bit all day long following the action as best I could on scotusblogs live feed/commentary.

If I were not 500 miles away instead of 50 there would have been no way to keep me away from such a historic hearing.

At one point today my boss came into my office and made a statement to the effect that I was consuming a lot of bandwidth surfing sites pertaining to SCOTUS and 2A....I said "Hmmmm Really?"...he was just f-ing with me because he KNOWS I'm a gunny....he actually wants to come shooting sometime....he's a recovering Progressive......another one bites the dust!

It's a good guess. That's when they go on break until October. Complicated opinion, will probably come out right at the end of the term.

I should have sent the huge MDShooters banner with someone. Dang.

I meant to try to get it from you before today but I've been so busy at work I didn't have a second of spare time this week.

We still made a very good showing with the shirts...at least 4 that I recall seeing.

Notice how the pro-gun people had their messages on their signs, while the antis just had great big "Brady Campaign" signs. What a bunch of scumbags. Free advertising, click here to donate.....................
