Thoughts on first pistol
+1 for the Glock 19. All of the pistol recommendations here are good though. See which one feels the most comfortable in your hand. It's hard to shoot well with an uncomfortable pistol. -

You are correct there! The cost can definitely be a factor. I know a Remington 1100 or 1187 barrel can be had for about $350. The 24" Benelli SBE barrel I bought for $550, which was still worth it. I can only imagine what the Browning barrels cost... -

I would put the Remington 870 and Mossberg 500 at the top of the list, just for aftermarket parts you might be interested in later. The other shotguns will work fine but have less aftermarket. Long range semi auto pistol
I think you are on the right track with the Glock 20 and the Witness Hunter. I have both and they are my go-to guns for the woods. I take the Glock 20 when I know the weather will be bad. Other than that, I take the Witness Hunter. Be sure and check out some of the loads by Underwood Ammo... -
Best Sharpener?
For sharpening at home, Lansky-type sharpeners work really well. For sharpening in the field, a fine ceramic rod or ceramic 'V' sharpener works great. The Smith's Pocket Pal works well enough and it's easy to keep with you. It has both ceramic and carbide. I don't recommend using carbide...- Nimrod
