    Congrats Derek!

I know the Laurel VE's submit them electronically. I'm kind of shocked that any VE group still uses USPS

I saw on the Ham Radio Crash Course's Discord server someone say they recently tested and passed, but that VEC mails. I guess they're old school...wonder if they still run radios with vacuum tubes. :D

They probably do, but they aren't the only ones. There are plenty of guys running rigs with that warm pretty glow.

Oh, I'm sure. I'm sure some are neat in that antique kind of way. I was trying to be funny. Mail. Meh. Especially these days.

On another note, I applied for a vanity call. My assigned call just doesn't "flow." I didn't realize they don't even start until 10 days later...then another 7 or 8.

So, if anyone else wants one, git er' done! Not sure I'd want to pay $35 for a vanity.

Yeah, they said they mail it and USPS has been pretty slow lately. It was the soonest test I could get to, including online, but I guess the online guys can get it transmitted quicker. More time to convince my wife to get hers!

I got an old buddy of mine hooked up this weekend. He lives in some socialist HOA over in virginia, so I ran a longwire just under the fascia of his siding - up about 25 feet and over about 25 feet. Can't see a thing. Connected to an AH4 and a 7300 that I did the mod on to split the RF and run HDSDR via an RTL SDR. He went from zero to full install in a day. Now he just needs his general!

It was a good time. His AH4 tuned the wire so fast it motivated me to install a longer and higher wire at my place - I should really get this tower up though...

    Good job!

If I had to, I could probably hide a 40 meter loop around my roof, but I don't need to hide anything at my house. An inconspicuous inverted L is another possibility for a stealthy HF antenna. There are a lot of simple antennae that can be put up with nothing showing.

Pretty cool. I've seen all kinds of things to do inside and out on youtube videos. Some are for-sale products like the Ventenna, others homemade. I saw one where a guy made a dipole using that copper tape on a sliding glass door or window to prove almost anything can be used.

Here's one disguised as an artificial flower pot

    And the copper tape antenna:

Most HF linear amplifiers are tube based.

And yes, a lot of guys running tube radios.

Got aforementioned buddy up and running a few weeks ago, and thought maybe I'd try to improve my own antenna situation in the short term. Pulled up a 135 foot wire that promptly got torn down in the snow/ice. Got it back up yesterday, and fired up the shack.

I'm using a 7300 with the filtered RF split, and half going to an RTL-SDR to run HDSDR for watching the band and tuning. Expecting an improvement, I find I am now looking at a veritable spur factory.

Switching the old wire back to the AH-4, the problem is pretty much gone. Definitely worse with the new, longer wire. Also only happens when I'm splitting the RF output. Pull off the RTL-SDR, and its gone. The winning combination is the new wire and the RTL-SDR. Looks like a porcupine.

I have some ideas, but they are mostly theories.

    Bummed!

I know people seriously into the hobby are kinda cold to Baofengs, But I have to say my offroad group changed over to them a couple of years ago and fully 25% got their ticket. Long term that is a significant injection of new blood, and more users means that the salivating over the bands by very powerful interests who want them and have been saying ham is dead or dying, will have some pushback

I agree. The entire reason I got my license was mostly due to buying my first UV5R and realizing there was so much that I couldn’t legally do with it.
