I'm paying a subscription for Norton. I essentially only use it for VPN, backup, and active/passive malware scans. I suspect I am wasting my money but it is idiot-proof (a.k.a., wife and kid-proof) which has value in and of itself. Resource consumption doesn't appear to be a problem (all laptops are i5 or i7 and have 16 to 32G memory).

    Which OS?

More than likely you are wasting money. Windows 7+ stick with the free Defender/Sec Essentials.
