If I reloaded I'd do 6.5 but I don't so I vote .308. I'd love to get one of these and top it with a Burris XTRII 5-25 w/scr reticle.

I'm a fan of the 7mm-08. My go to hunting caliber when using a rifle for deer.

It has better ballistics, accuracy, and long range performance then the 308 and 3006.

It's weird that it has not been more popular with the long range community considering that it has better barrel life then any 6mm, and less recoil then 308 and up in calibers. The 7mm is a well known caliber in the comp. World.

    6.5 creedmoor.

Reason: good shoulder, short cartidge length, COAL fits inside of AR10 mags.

Example, I can load long 143gr eld-x's, and still fit within mag oal parameters.

If I wanted to load VLD's just off the lands in 308/243/260, then I'm ****ed, because they'll break that length maximum. case compression and excessive bullet jump, oh boy.

Ruger also has another option in 6.5 Creedmoor ...

The Ruger American Predator 6.5 Creedmoor Rifle with 22-inch cold hammer-forged barrel that is free-floated for under $400 and is 6.6 lbs without the scope.

But I really, really don't need another caliber ... :nono: ... at least that's what I'm telling myself.

    Pretty fair review here ...

discusses weaknesses of a gun in this price range but notes the inherent accuracy of the platform.

there is also a barrel length difference between the 3. I would opt for the 308, biggest bullet, shortest barrel at 20", handier, lighter, much more practical than the others within 500 yards, reloads easy, but enough ammo from cheap stuff to share with a M1A/AR10 to modestly priced match ammo. If I was more into long range paper punching definitely
the 243, the 26" barrel and tight twist should be awesome for anything up to 107gr SMKs, pretty much handloads only, the highest velocity with the longest range to subsonic and the best BC of the 3

What bullets and velocities are you using to compare 3006 to 7mm0

My wife 3006 with factory fiocchi 168 gr sierra match kings and 26 inch er shaw barrel shoots and average 2700 fps

My buddies also custom rifle also 26 inch barrel with hand loads of 162 gr amax, 48gr of h4350. He is also getting 2700.

Using the factory BC for that bullet at that speed.3006 is 455 and 7mm08 is 625.

First pic is 3006 at 1000 yards with a 90 degree 10mph wind using vortex xlr ffp reticle
Second pic is 7mm08, everything is the same.

Now couple all of this data with less recoil from 7mm08 and your accuracy gets better and shootability. One of the major reasons 6mm and 6.5 are so popular.

With these ballistics the 3006 goes sub sonic at 1000 yards the 7mm08 at 1400.

One disadvantage he has on this load is they are past mag length he has to handload

And both of these rifles were chronoed using the same chrono

You need to look at 30-06 with the heavier bullets. The 30 cal 168s aren't all that great of a bullet. Try some of the slipperier Bergers. The 30-06 will put the 215 gr down range at 2700 fps or even higher with longer barrels. I don't know 7mm-08, so that's why I was asking for a good load. 30-06 I suspect comes out ahead with less drop and drift.

The reason I have stayed away from the heavier bullets is because it's my wifes rifle and I have tried to keep recoil down with the best bullet.

Just to bump this. Does anyone here own the RPR in .243 ?

I know, the 6.5 is the bees knees, but I already have a .243 rifle and boxes of brass piling up.

Pretty sure they discontinued the .243WIN. There's a new 6mm Creedmoor offering in its place. Nothing stopping you from buying the rifle in any caliber and getting a .243WIN barrel though.
