If you go Slower Lower, you can buy a hell of a house for cheap.

When we moved here, our Realtor advised us to look at larger school districts. The rationale is that larger districts have a larger tax base and don't need to hit tax payers as hard when they need money. It's easier for 50,000 people to fund a $1M project than 5,000 people. We're in Cumberland County, and we pay around $4K a year on a $450,000 house. FWIW, our house in MD or NOVA would be well north of $1M.
Coming from Texas, I agree that the tax situation is crazy here.
