I was cleaning up my loading room and found :) a brick of Nobel 209 shotshell primers so i decided to do some loading..

I have a 32 gal trash can full of once fired Win AA and Remington STS hulls so I decided to load them and do some sporting clays.

All the data I have found says they are interchangeable with Win 209 primers

So i start loading on my MEC 9000G... AA hulls load perfectly. Every once in a while, with the STS hulls, the primer wouldn't seat. and it was NOT me short cycling. I ruined probably a dozen shells or more and cleared at least that many jams in the machine because of it. I wasn't saving any time and I was wasting resources..

So I switched to the old standby MEC 600 JR, and started loading. I decided to de-prime, prime, and load in separate operations for simplicity sake. What I discovered is that some of the STS hulls seem to have a soft bottom. That is the ram depresses the shell further when priming which to me explains why they didn't seat fully on the 9000. They are not marked any differently than any of the other STS shells. Other than that, they load normally.
    Anyone else ever notice this?

Also, anyone have any experience with the Nobel primers? what was your experience?
    Thanks!

The STS primer pockets have a little bit of a step/taper in them, the Nobel primers are "straight-walled" so they tend to not seat well. When I use non-Remington primers, I take a philips screwdriver where the shaft just fits the primer holes and make it a little larger. It's the basewad/plastic of the hull that's tying up the primer. After the first pass with non-Remmy primers it's not a problem again.
