Is there any reason to buy one of these from a store instead of buying aftermarket parts and building your own? Is there any part that you cannot buy? I'm looking at some sites that sell parts and it seems after you change the barrel, stock, trigger, etc. then there is nothing stock left. I realize it costs a lot to build it but seems cheaper than ading the cost of a stock one just to change all of the parts anyway. Is there something I'm missing?

You can walk into a store and walk out with the 10/22 the same day. If you buy a receiver you will more than likely have to buy it on-line, have it shipped and pay the transfer fee. Other than that, no, if your intention is to swap all of the parts.

Are the recievers the same on all 10/22's? Get the cheapest gun to start with?

There are nice ($$$) third party ones with a scope mount machined in. Other than that, there are stainless steel versions of the 10/22 floating around.

What you pay depends on what you want out of it. You can build a 100yd MOA with the most basic receiver.

what are you looking for? something for competition target? plinking? or just want to have a tactical 10/22?

one of my 10/22 started from a walmart bought (cheapest version they had).. replaced the barrel and stock.. all for $400 (more or less) = tack driver.

    My situation -

Bought a 10/22 synthetic at K-Mart a bunch of years ago for $99.00
It shoots very well, for a stock 10/22.

When my youngest son started shooting, he 'took over' that rifle.
(He calls it "his", even though it isn't.)

So, I bought another 10/22, this time from Dick's, with hardwood (birch) stock for $149.00
    It's NEVER been fired.

I'm going to turn one of them into my project 10/22.

Which one would YOU modify, and why??

Neither. You clearly can't can't protect your own property and junior will end up owning a highend 10/22 in addition to his "stock" model.

Shoot the new one, check for accuracy. Is it more accurate than the first one? Then pimp out the first one. If it is less accurate, pimp out the new one.

I don't want tacticool. I'm liking the thumb hole stocks. Probably a blue theme.

rebuild the old one with your son (father/son) nice project. I did one with my oldest years ago-great time. By the way it is still in my safe, he built another on his own on zimmerman receiver and took that one when he move out on his own. Remember to let him make some of the decisions on parts.

Thanks for the link. The ones I have seen are $400. I did find a centerfire site and some of those guys have almost 2 grand into their 10/22. I can't see doing that.

If the older one shoots better then pimp the new one. My next 10-22 will end up in a Thompson SMG configuration. I think a Thompson bumpfire setup would be the ultimate setup.
