Don’t know, never got the story
I know a guy who has a genuine GI 1911 that was his father's, and I know the story about how it was obtained. "Legal" isn't really a definition one could use - IIRC, it was more of a situation that arose from the days of paper records, and this pistol falling through the cracks somehow with no official paper record. According to the unit, it simply didn't exist.

There's a fair amount of stuff in my Guard unit's supply area from years gone by that have no records - either they were obtained through less than honest methods and therefore no paperwork every existed on them, or the paperwork got lost over the years - most of these things are literally decades old. (Not weapons, but other mission related gear.)

That's cool. But I always wonder how does anyone get the "weapon they used while in the service"?

Can't speak as to this one but, when they switched from the 1911 to the M9, you had the opportunity to purchase your issued 1911 if you wanted to. Can't remember what the price was.

Nice pistol, rbird, with good history. A family heirloom for certain! Do you ever shoot it?

Forgive me, didn't notice the question. Yes I shoot it although not too often. It's not terribly accurate (shocker) but definitely shoot it a few times a year.
Might have to use it and my M1 Garand for the next C&R 2 gun match at AGC.

I have a 1911 Kimber classic gold match that shoot phenomenal for what I paid for it a few years back. I haggled the price down because of the faint idiot mark. I did a bit of trigger work and got the trigger pull down a pound or so. I shot this thermos standing unsupported at 45 yards and drilled it right in the middle.

And you posted that pic without a big smiley emoji?! Nice shooting…

I had a S1 Gold Match…should have kept it, beautiful blue. You have a keeper there.

I recently acquired this SR1911 in 10mm from a fellow MDS'er. I am going to be heading out with this and the G20 this afternoon for some range time.

Nice Ruger. I think they are better guns than they get credited for.

I've never really understood that. The fit and finish is pretty damned good for what they are. Do they compare to a Les Baer, Dan Wesson, or Nighthawk Custom in either form or function? Of course not, and they're not intended to. But they definitely stack up well to a lot of mid-grade Kimber or SA models, IMO.

The only complaint I have with the Ruger 1911’s are the select dimension fitting flats on the slide stop pin and thumb safety. Causes tighter lockup on one side more than the other. A good slide stop pin which is truly round will enhance lockup. Both of my Ruger’s attest to that.

Here's one you'll likely never see "in the wild" again....one of 6 Wiley Clapp prototypes Colt made for Talo..... This one was sent to a gun writer for evaluation, and for some reason Colt didn't take it back and destroy it as they usually do......so I added it to MY collection. :D
