I brought a Model 1917 30-06 EddyStone rifle from a gunshop in Rockville on Saturday. The rifle was in very bad shape and It was listed as parts because 40% of the rifle was missing. You could not even see through the bore. It was nasty.
Two weeks before, I was at the same gunshop when a lady walked out after leaving several rifles for consignment. I noticed two that caught my eye, the 1917 and an Inland M1 Carbine. I gave them an offer for the 1917 ($150) because the receiver, bolt and the stock (I discover later that the upper half of the stock was missing) looked good. The story of the rifles was that it was a revival project of her recent late husband which he never finished. She need cash and she was selling the rifles to pay some bills. I considered taking on the project and finishing the old man rifle out of respect, but i held back because buying parts for this old rifle could be costly. I took a mental picture of the missing items and searched online for the pieces. After researching online it would had cost me about $350 to $400 online for the parts. It was no longer feasible and I dropped the idea. I'm sorry old man and may you rest in peace.
Last Saturday, I was supposed to go to the Poolesville shooting range but something came up and the plans were cancelled. With nothing to do I ended up at the Frederick gun show. As soon as I walked in I met Joe and he had a magical box full of parts, YES 1917 EddyStone parts. I put out my list from my phone and Joe had all eddystone matching parts except for two, the Lower walnut hand guard and the Rear sight base screw. Joe gave me a great deal for all the parts. The project was back. I bought the parts for $160 and drove back to Rockville and bought the rifles after. The entire front sight was installed at the gunshop.
Buying parts before buying the rifles, who would had imagen this sequence? The project is ON!
Sorry for the long story. I Will post picture of the work in progress. I'm still missing two pieces. And, Yes I bought the carbine.
