My grandmothers cousin passed away and seeing as we were close and he had no kids left his guns to me. In examining them to clean them it appears that at one time he must have been into precision shooting and reloading, which is neat since I am into that and never knew he was. Both rifles he left to me have been rebarreled, glass bedded and had the triggers modified. (Might be the first timney drop in ever lol) the first rifle is a Remington 721 that has a varmint like contour barrel stamped .220 arrow. From what I’ve read this is a “.220 Wilson arrow” and there was known to be variations in the chamber. Luckily this one came with a die set from “the Hollywood gunshop” that needs a thorough cleaning. The second rifle I believe to be K98 BCD 43 Mauser, also with a heavier varmint style barrel but with no markings. This rifle does have a pretty cool adjustable peep sight along with a quick attach scope. The guns came together in a custom made wooden box with some hand loaded ammo, .220 arrow and 7x61 S&H. These has been sitting in the box in a closet for who knows how long so The ammo had a decent amount of corrosion on it so I ran them thru my media tumbler to clean them up. The 7x61 ammo seems well made but the .220 swift looks almost like it was not run thru the seater die as the bullet is just barely in the case. Also when a bullet fell out in my hand I thru it on my press and the seating die (that’s already setup) seated the bullet much deeper then the original. (Visible in ammo pic) That being said I think I will pull the .220 and reload them all. I’m curious If anyone on here has experience loading these cartridges or with shooting these model receivers?

Thanks for the link! Yes I’m pretty excited to get it out and a load worked up. Should be the ticket on groundhogs!!

Again as I said before.... no need for "new" cartridges, there's already a million of them out there. None of us live in the Yukon and 99/999% of us will ever see it.

The 7x61 pre dated the Remington 7 mm Magnum , with essentially the same ballistics .

The simplified version is 7x61 can do whatever 7mmRem can , and vice versa .

7x61 ammo and brass is not common , but the brass can be formed from 7mmRemMag , or shortened and formed from any full length H&H based brass .

Never messed with the arrow but as Bigfoot said the 7x61 is essentially a 7mm Rem Mag and little difference between the 2. The older load manuals have data for it. The 220 Arrow is a 220 swift with the shoulder changed to 30*. You make the brass by running unfired swift brass into the arrow FL die. This also gives it a longer neck and standard swift brass won't chamber in the arrow chamber. The reason for the 30* shoulder was to help with the stretching of the swift cases and it helped with this. Swifts were known for stretching brass a lot.The loads I could find show H-450 powder (discontinued), 4064, and H-380 and 50 gr bullets could be driven to over 3900 fps. Hope this helps.

Or to be historically correct , the 7mm Rem Mag is essentially a copy of the 7x61 .

Very nice rifles. You have two unique rifles. I have used those Timney Sportsman triggers in at least 4 rifles I built. The trigger should have two small allen screws in the front to adjust trigger pull. I believe they all were 2-4 lbs. adjustable.
