Will depend on the rule set, but for USPSA, yes.

A can in competition screws up the shot timer, unless the SO gets right up in your business. My CED7000 will not reliably pick up a whole string unless on my support forearm.

I know that Nigel was using a can on his Grendel for the three gun at Quantico several months ago; I don't think they bumped him to open, but I'm sure that USPSA would be a different story.
