Future events the criminals might be known as IRS Agents, they DO steal your stuff without proof of illegal activities, and who doesn’t have $600 transactions for them to scrutinize regardless of legality.

The article says the case was referred to the DC police but wouldn't the FBI b interested in investigating people impersonating them? Isn't Impersonating a federal agent a federal crime?

As long as the local jurisdiction handles things the feds are often more than happy to defer to them...they can always place charges later if they desire. Basically...let the locals spend their money to prosecute. If the crime was big enough to warrant some face time with the media the US Attorney would usually be more than happy to big foot the locals and claim jurisdiction.

My first clue would have been when they started stealing my stuff and couldn't pronounce basic words. YMMV.
I figure if they steal your stuff but don't take you away in handcuffs, they're "ordinary" thieves.

    The others are "special" agents.

*****Yea, stealing of your stuff might be a clue. Thankfully, it doesn't seem like the folks who were robbed were hurt/killed so there's that. Hopefully, they catch the people that did this. This is not uncommon in other countries, especially Latin America where fake law enforcement (heck, sometimes real law enforcement..unfortunately..) rob people. Sometimes they target tourists, and other times the well to do in nice homes.

I've read of rival drug gangs doing this as well, in other countries mostly but it has probably happened here in the states too.

    That was my first impression.

Drugs. Rivals. Maybe a lawyer holding someone’s stash.

I knew a guy, way back in the 1970’s down in Florida, who made a very decent living off of burglarizing ONLY drug dealers’ apartments. Briefly. His chief wasn’t happy about it as he was an undercover cop.

Then again, given their current track record, it wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest if this WAS an FBI operation.

******Seems like small potatoes so it was probably rival drug dealers or folks who were cased after having the appearance of wealth/prosperity, etc.. It said in the article that the thieves made off with two safes, but they sound like small personal safes vs a large Graffunder safe loaded with jewelry, guns/ammo, stacks of gold bullion, and perhaps some beef bouillon from Whole Foods, etc.. (that stuff can get expensive!).

Doubtful the FBI would bother with any of that unless there was a law enforcement reason to do so (Jan 6 reprisal plotters, MAGA country country singers, climate change deniers, or folks with actionable intelligence leading to the indictment and conviction of the Clinton's, etc.. )

Speaking of which Last Episode of Yellowstone Riffed on that.
Of note, if somebody came to my property (or just off of my property), and shot my dog, one (or several) of us would become dead in one damn quick hurry.
In advance, for those that see my reply and think (or post), "but it's just a dog, are you CrAzY??? GFY.

Every day that passes I have less and less use for representatives of the federal government. I love my dogs more every day.

I can hear it now "This is why we must pass this legislation, no one should be allowed to own dark clothing that has any agency logo or any kind of tactical gear. No one needs jackboots to hunt deer."

Given the twitter files being released by Musk and curated by Talbi and Weiss on FBI involvement in censorship, I'm not quite sure why I should be seeing the FBI as the good guys.
A year ago, most of us would be chiming in; "Well, it's NOT the rank and file agents on the street". I notice less and less of that, as more uncensored or previously suppressed truth comes out. I am of the firm, solid opinion that the FBI is a putrid cesspool of corrupt, rotten men and women (and since it's 2022, whatever else). Rank and file agents don't rise by bucking their putrid, compromised, rotten bosses, they rise in THAT organization by aping them.
