In a field that included many full custom benchrest rifles and with several nationally ranked out-of-state shooters at the ARA Outdoor Unlimited 2023 Maryland State Championship on Sept. 17, a 1965 factory 40XB took 2nd place. The rifle has a Jewell trigger, has been epoxy/pillar bedded and re-crowned and fitted with a home-made bag rider and a Harrell’s tuner, but has the 58 y/o factory CM barrel and original walnut stock.

This is outstanding! No doubt the rifle is dead-nuts accurate - what was the caliber of the rifle? It sounds like the rifle is plenty tricked out though - it has had some work done to eke out the best of what that rifle is capable of.

At the end of the day, all other things being equal, it's always going to come down to the shooter, and how well they've prepped their ammo.

    Thanks.
    It is a 22LR. (40X-B)
ARA is a rimfire BR organization.
I had enough good ammo for 5 of the 6 cards.
    (I weight sort ammo.)

    This is in "Race Trim".

The scope is a 20+ y/o Weaver T-46. There is a 3"x 6"x 1/2" aluminum track plate attached to the front of the stock for riding the front rest. The rear "bag rider" is simply a piece of round aluminum tubing bolted onto a 1" x 1/4" piece of bent flat bar screwed onto the buttplate. The one piece rest is a refurbished vintage Pappas. (There is a short arca rail behind the track plate for bipod attachment when the rifle is not in the BR rest.)

That is beautiful, always wanted a 40X and never ran across a deal. Congrats to you for the hard work and dedication required to make that thing shine.
