AGC has a letter writing app that will let you communicate with everyone in Annapolis. Here is what i just sent:
As an honorably-discharged, retired and disabled military man I am repulsed by attacks on our liberties and Constitutional rights by the legislature and Governor of this "Free State".
Lets have a facts-based and rational discussion on gun control, starting with the premise that criminals and mentally-ill people do NOT obey the law, and that, like President Obama himself has stated, "...no set of laws can stop..." a massacre like Newton.
Fact 1. So called Assault Weapons (AWs) -a purely made up term by Handgun Control Inc.- since a real AW has to be a firearm capable of FULLY AUTOMATIC fire, have been responsible for ZERO murders or shootings in Maryland. Long guns (not AWs) have only been used in two shootings in MD last year - TWO. Not a single one of the weapons listed on Maryland's AW list has been used in a crime in Maryland, with the notable exception of the Beltway Sniper (J.L.Malvo), which were acts of a terrorist (Google his jailtime writings and drawings). Malvo used his AR-15 as a sniper rifle, (single shot). Magazine capacity limits would not have stopped his acts since he could have loaded one round at a time without any magazine attached!
Fact 2. The 1994 AWB was allowed to sunset by Congress in 2004 after it was found that "AWs" were used in only 1.4 percent of crimes involving firearms and 0.25 percent of all violent crime. DOJ has steadily reported a decline in violent crime since 2004, in spite of record increases in the number of firearms purchased since 2008! Nationwide, over 90% of gun-related violence is comitted with handguns and NOT long guns!
Fact 3. Absolute gun bans in Chicago and D.C. have done nothing but create "gun-free" war zones, where only criminals carry guns ILLEGALLY. More children are shot every year in those two cities, than have been killed in all mass shootings in the U.S. combined. Every single mass shooting since 1950, except one (Congresswoman Giffords'), has occurred in a "gun-free" zone. Meanwhile, law-abiding citizens, and yes, children, are left defenseless, just so lawmakers can feel good about "gun control".
Fact 4. Acording to the DOJ's National Victimization Survey, and the CDC, there are over 1,000,000 defensive uses of firearms in the U.S. every year; on 97 percent of these, the gun is never fired, but its mere presence served as deterrent to a crime. You want to punish 99.9% of your constituents for the actions of a few hundred? How is that rational or sensible?
Fact 5. The right to keep and bear arms has always been about the People's ability to keep our government in check; it was never about hunting or sports, which is another propaganda tool of anti-2A zealots. Moreover, in McDonald (2010), SCOTUS ruled, "…individual self-defense is 'the central component' of the right.
Isn't it hypocritical of our public SERVANTS -who enjoy taxpayer-funded ARMED security details - to impose on the People draconian restrictions on our ability to protect ourselves from tyranny and criminals, and balk at the suggestions of armings schools staff (when already every college campus in Maryland has armed security). So I ask, is it really about the children, or is it about the guns? Is YOUR life worth more than my own or my children's?
