A 34y old woman with 2 kids busted in Nogales for attempting to smuggle 100 AK47 mags and ~4K rounds of ammo into Mexico...

Just wondering, what is the law on exporting? I'm sure Mexico must have laws relevant to imports, but is this amount of material large enough to trigger US export controls? Seems like it must be, since I can't imagine US Customs/BP are enforcing Mexican import laws... anybody know?

    The $64K Question

Where did she buy that large a quantity of ammunition and mags, and who allowed it to 'walk' ? I am sure that she didn't make 100s of small purchases just to bundle them up in duffle bags and try to haul them over the border.

This has ATF written all over it. Note that CBP made the arrest and seizure, NOT ATF.

Just like the 'kids' trying to make a buck on straw purchases that were NEVER tracked under F&F, a 34yo mother of two was probably going to net $100 for her 'troubles'.

This also smells of Obamarx ... Alinsky Rule #7. A tactic that drags on too long becomes a drag. The ATF got caught 'walking firearms', so try ammo and mags ... in quantity. Afterall, you can't have a bloody Mexican druglord shootout with empty AKs.

Sorry, tinfoil hat was slipping ... :tinfoil:

Isn't that exactly what this administration has been advocating by it's repeated claims that Mexican drug lords are principally getting arms through private sales in the US? Isn't that what the crappy UN treaty on small arms is all about?

All sentimentality aside, whyTF are we enforcing Medico's borders when we are short on money and can't even secure ours?

    Why?

Because they want to seize the cash going back to Mexico and keep it under the asset foreiture laws. The Mexican drug cartel is a $29 Billion a year business. And getting a piece of that is a lot of money to add to the meager budget that you get.

I've often wondered why we care what leaves the country.

I'm sure there is a list of things that shouldn't be allowed to leave, but WTF do we care about Mexicans killing Mexicans.

If this is such a big problem, close the f'ing boarder to foot and car traffic, make all travel and shipping VIA rail, ship or plane.

We care as much about what's going south into Mexico, as they care about what's coming north. :sarcasm:

4K isn't that much. I mean really, you and a buddy with FA ak-47s could burn through that in an afternoon. Call me when they catch 40k or 400k.

Anything on the USML and parts of any item described require State Department approval for export on a DSP-5. Magazines, rounds, parts, anything requires permission. All Central American countries are governed under the Crime Control Act which prohibits non sporting firearm exports to these countries. With a military or police contract you can export. An individual who wants to send his Sig 226 to Honduras is a no go. Not having a DSP-5 is considered a very serious crime.

Sporting weapons such as hunting rifles and shotguns are governed under the Department of Commerce and those permits are far easier to obtain. For any arms export you need to provide end user certificates and a corresponding import permit (in English) from the destination country.

You guys might not see this as a big deal, but it is. I'm from Arizona, so I know more than most people what the situation is on our border. Our porous border is a direct threat to national security. This ammo was going directly to the cartels, and would be used to kill, harass, and expand their influence. 4k rounds of ammo and 100 mags doesn't deserve a second look on this side of the border, but it represents something much more sinister on the other side. If we want less restrictions on legitimate ownership of weapons, we must strongly condemn illegal and improper possession of weapons. This "everybody should have guns" isn't the smartest attitude to have. Who the hell sells 4k rounds to a 34 year old woman who probably doesn't speak English, and probably paid in cash? We should be mad because that's a lot of ammo that US civilians won't get to shoot now.

Cartels have deliberately chosen not to behave violently in the US, and not to kill US citizens, because they know it would result in public outrage, and possibly a military response. (The US military that is, much scarier than the Mexican military) This PR tactic is working great. The American public doesn't seem to mind an open border.

Why not? The Federales sure as hell ain't! The BATF is in collusion with the Cartels!

Somebody's got to do it! Thank God for the fine lads we've got in the Border Patrol -- truly our first line of Homeland Security.

So, she's a US citizen who could order ammo online, just like you and I.

Are you suggesting we establish limits to how much one person can buy?
Would you demand I.D. for ammo purchases?

Where do you see that she was a US citizen? I'm betting she wasn't.

She's not just like you and me. She was involved in international arms trafficking. In Mexico 7.62 ammo has a 99% chance of being used to try to kill someone. In Arizona, there's a 99% chance of it being used to put holes in paper and old rusty washing machines.

Yes, I would ask to see ID for ammo purchases if someone wanted to buy 4k rounds from me. Probably write the name and DOB down if I slightly thought something was weird. I do think people that sell guns and ammo have a duty to try to prevent gun crimes and illegal gun ownership from happening. If they don't, then the government will, and that's a much worse option. Of course, there's always the dealer that will sell a Jennings to a crackhead, and that's where gun control advocates get a foothold.
