    I pick up a sporterized carcano a bit ago for 75 bucks. It's pretty bad but I'm maybe looking to make it a long term project rifle. I've just got no idea what it originally was.

    I'm not an expert, but the website below may give you some insight. It looks to me from the markings like it started as a M91 chambered in 6.5x52 Carcano, built in 1918 at Terni as a Fusile (long rifle) and was "rearsenaled" (including being shortened) at Terni in 1927 as a M91/24 Moschetto Truppe Speciali. However, the stock looks like it might be from a M38 Fusile corto (short rifle) since it has finger groove cutouts, which the Moschetto TS didn't have.
