shadetree gunplumber...figured I'd give a shot at an AR-10 float tube so a friend could use it for prone matches. The Armalite fiberglass tubes only have a sling swivel on the end, so they're not conducive to prone sling shooting, where you need to adjust where the sling attachment point is. Used some 6061 aluminum and milled out the sling swivel rail, and then put in some cooling vents on the side. The real bitch was the barrel nut. The Armalite system uses two nuts to attach the barrel to the receiver and float tube. I machined a new nut to hold the barrel to the receiver, but had to make it in a large enough diameter to hold the 2.06" tubing. The real bitch was internal threading to the receiver pitch...took a couple tries! Once it was finished I drilled for the gas tube, parkerized the nut and anodized the tube. Came out pretty sharp. I put some real torque on it slinging in, and it stayed true...now to see how it shoots in a match!
